Dr. Michael Klaper's Medicine Capsule Newsletter

Hello Everyone!

Welcome to Medicine Capsule #31!

I have some EXCITING NEWS to share with you in the first feature below about how you can help me create a nutritional awakening in Western medicine. Also in this edition, I’ll tell you about some fascinating recent meetings I was privileged to attend as well as some exciting future appearances. I’ll share some hopeful news from the world of nutrition-based healing and finish with three delicious Holiday recipes from one of my favorite vegan chefs. So, get comfortable and prepare to savor this bite-sized morsel, MedCap #31.

Announcing an Exciting New Initiative!

As subscribers to the Medicine Capsule know well, I am dedicating the rest of my career to awakening Western medicine to the importance of our patients’ diets as the chief cause — and the potential cure — for most of the devastating degenerative diseases we face.

On November 27, 2019, we will be announcing our Moving Medicine Forward Initiative to make (plant-based) nutrition a part of the education curriculum in every medical across North America.

Because you are a “Medicine Capsule” subscriber, you will be receiving an e-mail on 11/27/18 detailing the Initiative and how you can help. I’m excited to reach the young doctors-in-training before “pharmaco-sclerosis” sets into their minds and distorts their viewing of health and medicine — and, instead, awaken them to the importance of what their patients are eating — both as a cause of their disease and, potentially, as the main tool to restore them to health. Won’t you help me succeed in this important mission? Look for the e-blast on the 27th and be part of the campaign that is Moving Medicine Forward!

Recent Travels

In September, I attended the 5th International Plant-based Nutrition Healthcare Conference in San Diego, CA. Talk about signs of the times! Over 1000 physicians and other health professionals from around the world attended. I was honored to make a presentation on water-only fasting in clinical practice and to be on a  panel discussing practical applications of clinical nutrition in office practice. It was such a pleasure to meet so many colleagues in so many specialties — surgery, neurology, family practice, rheumatology, radiology, and, oh joy, dietitians — and from all over the world! There were clinicians from India, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, Canada, South Africa, France, Italy, and many other nations, all attesting to the awareness of plant-based healing emerging world wide. A highlight for me was being interviewed by Dr. Bassem Youssef (shown above), a heart surgeon-turned-comedian and political commentator, known as “the Jon Stewart of the Arab World”, for his new film. Next year, the PBNHC conference will be in scenic Oakland, California.

In October, I attended the annual meeting of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine in Indianapolis. Finally, “official” recognition is being given to the fact that it is our lifestyles — especially our diet, but also our sleep, stress levels, alcohol ingestion, personal relationships and overall happiness key determinants of whether we are healthy or ill. I look forward to becoming board-certified in this most powerful new branch of medicine.

While in Indianapolis, I was invited to give the keynote address at the ACLM chapter in Vilnius, Lithuania on April 12, 2019, as well as present Grand Rounds at the University Hospital in Warsaw, Poland. These countries, with limited medical resources, see a tsunami of clogged arteries and diabetes about to swamp their limited medical resources, so they want to help prevent as much of these scourges as possible.

In September, I traveled to Hawaii to address the physicians and staff at Tripler Army Hospital as well as speak at the Oahu VegFest. A highlight of our trip to Maui was meeting 8-year old “Vegan Evan” whose dedication to the animals and a plant-based lifestyle are truly inspiring.

My Medical Friends — Making Medicine Better

Cardiologist Danielle Belardo, M.D. (shown to the left) challenged 500 fellow physicians to adopt a plant-based diet for a week. The response has been tremendous, and life-changing, for these doctors, and, surely for their patients, as well.

…and talk about a “sign of the times”,  Dr. Michelle McMackin, an internist in New York City is (rightfully) excited about her hospital (the venerable Bellevue Hospital) offering a program in Plant-Based Lifestyle Medicine!

Dr. Klaper with John Salley

In the last edition of MedCap, I reported that I was honored to testify in Sacramento, along with other members of the team from Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine, including basketball legend John Salley, to get plant-based meals served in California hospitals.

Guess what? We won! SB 1138, a landmark bill that will provide hospital patients and prisoners a healthful plant-based option at every meal, has been signed into law! Sen. Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley) authored the bill, which was co-sponsored by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and Social Compassion in Legislation. There is reason to stay hopeful and get active! There is always something people with passion can do!

Closing Thoughts

There is an old Johnny Mercer song, “Accentuate the Positive” that reminds us that even though bleakness may be all around us, it is our choice what to focus upon. There are open-hearted people doing wonderful things in every corner of the world. One is probably standing very near to you right now. You are likely one of them yourself — or could be. Yes, the forces of darkness are certainly evident — in the news, in overheard conversations, in the anxieties we all feel. Yet, courage, vision and energy are also available to us at every moment, within ourselves, in those around us, and, in this internet age, in allies waiting to be garnered from across the globe. We each can do something to make our small part of the world a little more sane, a little more loving. This Medicine Capsule has been filled with people doing just that.

The goal of life should not be to achieve happiness; it should be to be useful — and from making ourselves useful, in loving service to those around us, the deepest happiness will flow. Find something in your world to heal, to soothe, to brighten, to make right. It starts with your sincere smile of greeting towards all who come into your presence. Goodness and healing can flow from that moment — and spread to the whole world from there.
Until next time — and be on the lookout for the Moving Medicine Forward E-blast on November 27th!
