UPDATE: THE UNITED NATIONS !!!
It is Thursday night, March 5, and I just spent over an hour speaking to Liliana De Lucca, a TI who has a prior 25-year employment history with the United Nations. It appears that it was Liliana who alerted the activists in Europe to the UN call for questionnaires and she had an integral hand in developing the strategy that enabled our European friends to gain entry into this session of the UN Human Rights Council. There is only so much that I'm allowed to share here due to potential perp interference, however what I can tell you is that what is currently happening came together as a result of a confluence of events beginning with the UN Rapporteur's concern with Julian Assange and his reports of "psychological torture" which landed this ball squarely in our court!
The TI's working in Europe are now making important contacts so that our issues can be looked at expeditiously by individuals at the UN who are becoming aware of what is happening to us and preparing to assist in us a variety of ways.
For many years TI's have written to the United Nations lodging complaint after complaint about electronic harassment only to receive form letter replies - if they received a reply at all. As Liliana explained, it was because the UN did not have the information or personnel to handle this type of issue.
That has changed with recent events and guys, the amazing;y simple reason for this is that the United Nations has the internal mechanism to address our issues where none exists in our own system within the United States or anywhere else that I know of.
There is a United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment who is now in a position to look at individual complaints and make country visits to places where there are reports of torture - including "cybertorture." And, says Liliana, he is supported in his pursuit of "psychological torture" or "cybertorture" claims by the UN Secretary-General himself.
I have been doing a lot of reading about the United Nations this week and the humanitarian work they do across the globe is vast, comprehensive, and amazing. There are legions of locations and workers helping people mostly in developing countries with basic survival necessities and administering emergency aid in unimaginable, far-flung places.
It is awe-inspiring to read of the many programs that are helping and supporting the human condition. It will renew your faith in humanity. And as a 25-year employee, Liliana wholeheartedly agrees. So forget the hype. The good that the UN does far outweighs whatever bad press they receive.
Well, there is much more to come in the weeks and months ahead as our European allies work in Geneva, Switzerland and beyond to make contacts with the teams of individuals and institutional resources available to them to have our issues taken seriously.
These are important steps because as I stated, there is no such internal mechanism in our United States or anywhere else with a design that can address our issues to my knowledge.
Stay tuned for further updates from our European allies as they begin to report directly on their progress!
