Here’s the Real History of
Mother’s Day
(Alice E. M. Underwood)
Moms didn’t come up with Mother’s Day as an easy way to get pancakes in bed. And despite how it seems, card companies didn’t invent it as a way to make a few (billion) bucks.
There’s more to the history of Mother’s Day than meets the eye. In addition to the history of the holiday, there’s a whole lot of controversy. There are debates about who came up with the holiday first and lawsuits about who can use the name “Mother’s Day.” One of the founders tried to get the holiday scratched from the books, even after fighting to get it recognized as a national day. Besides all that, there’s the question of where that pesky apostrophe goes.

Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Freedom
for the Future”
Aim: Understand the
role of the Holy Spirit in our relationships with God and Jesus;
Feel
empowered by the Holy Spirit even in the midst of suffering,
weakness, or loss of direction, and Live
with hope as we seek God’s purpose and calling.
Background:
Romans 8:18-30
Bible Lesson:
Romans
8:18-30
“For
I reckon that the sufferings of this present time [are] not worthy
[to be compared] with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”
Romans 8:18 KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
Our Study comes from Apostle
Paul’s Epistle or Letter to the believers in Rome. He wrote this
letter while he was in Corinth. Paul’s life before his conversion
on the Damascus Road included the persecution of Christians. After
his conversion, his name was
changed from Saul to Paul and he himself
endured great
persecution for sharing the
Gospel. Paul became just as dedicated to sharing the Gospel as he
was in
persecuting Christians. Paul’s Letter forcefully explains that
whether Jew or Gentile, all are sinners in need of salvation. He
declares that the only path to salvation is a personal relationship
with Jesus Christ through faith and complete obedience to Him. In
Chapter 8, Paul opens declaring that for those that are in Christ,
there is no condemnation (8:1-17).
The focus of verses
18-30, for those who
are in Christ, is that
everything we encounter in
life will work for our good. Paul does not state that everything
will be good, feel good, or be enjoyable, but eventually we will
realize that God is using each experience to our benefit, even
though it may not be apparent while we are going through it. During
the time of this
letter from Paul, believers were being persecuted because
of their beliefs and Paul
himself was
enduring
many hardships for sharing the Gospel.
-
Romans
8:18-25, Freedom for Creature and
Creation: As Paul
considers what he has gone through because of his beliefs and
sharing of the Gospel and what the readers may experience for
the sake of the Gospel, he
counts
these hardships as nothing
compared with the glory he
will enjoy in the future with the Lord. Paul
is convinced that the struggle is worth it. He explains that even
God’s creation eagerly awaits God’s realization
of His children’s promised future status in Christ. Paul refers to
the Fall in the Garden of Eden when our representative, Adam sinned
and brought God’s curse of punishment upon us and all of creation.
Because of sin, the
fruit of the ground would only be realized by the toil of mankind.
He personifies creation by
stating that
it too
possesses
the same hope that believers possess for the new heaven and new
earth, which is the restoration by God of His creation to the
original intended order of things before the Fall of Mankind. In
other words, like believers anxiously anticipating
a time when there will be no more death or decay like wise God’s
creation seeks a time that
will be free from misuse
and destruction. Paul compares this anticipation to that of child
birth. Because of sin, a mother endures suffering and pain leading
up to
the birth of her child. The birth is such a joyous occasion that it
overshadows
all of the pain and discomfort experienced during the nine months of
the child’s development within the mother’s womb.
Paul
acknowledges that even with the Holy Spirit which God gives to
indwell within us as
believers,
there is a longing for the future glory of a new body created for
eternity and for the state of life where there is no sin or
suffering. As believers, we become children of God; however, our
adoption will be made complete with the transformation of our bodies
into ones that are immortal. This is
God’s Promise to all
believers. Paul likens the process of adoption to
the believer confidently
and patiently
awaiting
the fulfillment of God’s
Promise. A child awaiting adoption eagerly awaits the completion of
the adoption process. When all matters are completed in the process,
the child is given a status equal to a natural born child of the
family with all of the
rights and privileges afforded every member of his/her family. Roman
law did not allow the
reversal of the adoption
process. Adoption was
a permanent change of status for the adopted child.
In verses 24-25, Paul states
that the hope of eternal life was given at the time of a believer’s
conversion. As believers, we do not see the end, but the hope is
planted in us. Paul states that there is no need for hope for
something that is already seen or is already
visible. Hope exists for
things not seen but believed. Believers are encouraged to be patient
and confident as we await the manifestation and
realization of our Hope in God’s Promise of Eternal Life.
-
Romans
6:26-27, The Spirit’s Freeing
Intercession: The Holy Spirit
that indwells all believers was given by God when Jesus completed
His earthly ministry. He helps us in our weakest moments. As
believers endure persecution and hardships, many times it is not
clear what to pray for. The Holy Spirit intercedes for us with
utterances that we cannot even understand and aligns our will with
the Will of God which guarantees God’s response. The Holy Spirit
being the Third
Person
of the God Head is always in harmony and in complete
agreement with God the
Father. Therefore believers have two intercessors, the Holy Spirit
aligning our prayers with Father’s Will as He pleads our needs and
Jesus Christ,
the Son of God, seated at the right hand of the Father who
is interceding on our
behalf.
-
Romans
6:28-30, Free to Hope: Paul
confidently states that all things, even those that seem bad for us
as well as those that seem good for us, are being worked out by God
for our
good since we are called to carry out His purpose. This implies
that God has a purpose for each of us and that it is important for
each of us to seek His
purpose for our lives.
Time is within our
all knowing God who knows the past, present, and the future. We on
the other hand are within
time. God knows
in advance those who will accept His invitation for discipleship;
therefore, making
us children
of God which grants
us the right to
become
heirs and joint heirs with His Son, Jesus Christ, who was the
firstborn of many brothers and sisters. Knowing all things in
advance, God called (issued the invitation), God justified
(gave us
a
right standing through Jesus Christ), and He glorified (extended the
right of
entrance into His royal presence). All
of this gives the believer reason to hold confidently to a Hope in
God’s Promises in spite of life’s experiences whether pleasant
or otherwise.
Take
Aways:
-
The
indwelling Holy Spirit provides intercession with God the Father on
our behalf even when we are unable to formulate our prayer requests
in words.
-
God
is aware of each believer’s situation and circumstances and will
work them to our good if we love Him and are called according to His
purpose.
-
Our
Hope in God’s Promise of Eternal Life was placed in our hearts at
our conversion
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“But
the Comforter, [which is] the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send
in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to
your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” John 14:26 KJV
“For
his anger [endureth but] a moment; in his favour [is] life: weeping
may endure for a night, but joy [cometh] in the morning. “ Psalms
30:5 KJV
“But
as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have
entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for
them that love him. “ 1 Corinthians 2:9 KJV
“Brethren,
I count not myself to have apprehended: but [this] one thing [I do],
forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto
those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize
of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14
KJV
“But
sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and [be] ready always to [give]
an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is
in you with meekness and fear:” 1 Peter 3:15 KJV
“Blessed
[be] the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us
with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly [places] in Christ,
just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that
we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having
predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself,
according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the
glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.”
Ephesians 1:3-6 NKJV
“In
Him you also [trusted], after you heard the word of truth, the gospel
of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed
with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our
inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the
praise of His glory.” Ephesians 1:13-14 NKJV
“Let
no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for
necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. And
do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the
day of redemption.” Ephesians 4:29-30 NKJV
