The Love Of God
Stephen Heleman

Each week we will start our study of who God is by saying this prayer, "God, I want to see you as you are, the real God."

Three Truths About Love

1) It is a universal need. In order to live our best lives, we need more than just food, shelter, and clothing; we need love.
2) There is a universal solution. The One who created us to need love provides us with His perfect love.
3) Too often, we tragically reject God's love. Sometimes we try to fill the void with temporary love rather than with God's eternal, life-giving love.

For us to truly experience God's love, we must realize His love is not like anything else on earth.

God's Love Is Not Like Our Love

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16

John 3:16 is probably one of the most quoted Bible verses. It also shows us just how different God's love is.
God loved. God's love is not a response because we have something to offer Him, or because of something we do, it is His choice. God loves us because it is who He is.
Because He loved, He gave. God's love is not a feeling dependent on circumstances. His love is part of who He is. He loves us so much that He gave His best, His only Son.
Because He gave, we can have life. God's gift, motivated by His love for us, meets our greatest need. Without Him we are spiritually dead and we cannot save ourselves. He knows His Son is our only hope.

God's love gives us what we need the most, when we deserve it the least, at the greatest personal cost.

How Do We Respond To God's Love?

  • Receive It. God loves us so much that He wants us to be a part of His family. John 1:12 tells us that when we receive His gift and believe in his name, He gives us the right to become His children. Are you ready?
  • EnJOY it. Romans 8:38-39 reminds us that God's love cannot be taken from us and nothing can lessen it. There is nothing greater than His love. Because His love is always with us, joy is available to us. When life is difficult, remember that this world is temporary, but His love is eternal. How can you enjoy God's love?
  • Share it. We have been given love like no other; a love that sacrifices so that others can have life. We should then show that same kind of love, as referred to in John 15:13 . When you sacrifice for God's love, it is never wasted.

There is no greater love than the love of God. Stop looking for love in anything this world has to offer.
