What's on in Malaga over the next 2 weeks
Meeting Matisse – in honour of the (excellent) Matisse exhibition on at the moment at the Pompidou Centre, the museum has a free evening of workshops, performances and concerts themed around his work tomorrow Saturday 30 March from 8.30pm. Visitors can experiment with their own interpretations of Matisse’s works, see dance, listen to jazz and join in the jam session from 10.30 to 11.30pm. There’s also a pop-up bar with DJ. Free entry
Malaga Meditate – if meditation’s your thing make your way to the CAC esplanade on Sunday (31 March) at noon for a guided meditation. There’s a short talk in Spanish on the benefits of meditation before hand and apparently those who stay until the end (1.30pm) will get a prize… Take your own cushion/mat to sit on.
Free Saturday lunchtime concert – the Jorge Rando Museum continues its Saturday lunchtime concerts. They take place every Saturday at noon in the chapel next to the museum on Calle Cruz del Molinillo, just north of the city centre.
Sunday markets – Muelle Uno arts and crafts market takes place this Sunday (31) and next (7 April) between 11am and 6pm. Malagueta 4 Market also sets up this Sunday (31) on the eastern seafront from 10am to 7pm. And the Plaza de la Merced Market celebrates its March edition, also on Sunday (31) between 11am and 6pm.
Jazz at Artsenal – the Alicia Tamariz Quarter performs at this funky art space on the corner on Muelle Uno on Sunday (31 March) at 4pm.
Easter Concert - Malaga City Band offers its traditional annual concert for Easter on Sunday (31) in the lovely Sagrado Corazón chapel (in the Cathedral grounds) at 8.30pm. The band will play a selection of religious music and marches. Free entry, but get there early to be sure of a seat.
Red Friday – the monthly retro market takes place at La Termica cultural centre next Friday (5 April) from 7pm to midnight. Usual range of stalls selling vintage gear and accessories, arts and crafts plus food trucks, live music and a British Council documentary (title hasn’t been released yet). La Térmica is on Avda de los Guindos near the western seafront and you can get there by the No 7 bus from Plaza de la Marina or walk along the seafront (about 30 mins from the centre). Don’t miss the photography exhibitions and the original tiled floors and stained glass windows inside. Free entry.
Pre-Easter processions – lots of thrones have to be moved from one church/chapel to another in preparation for the Easter processions proper and the week before Easter (5 to 13 April) sees several traslados taking place. These mini-processions aren’t nearly as big and as crowded as the ones during Holy Week itself, but worth catching if you happen to be the route. See the full list and itineraries here.
Free Easter concert – the monthly Sunday concert at the Museum of Malaga takes on an Easter theme this year. The Lent Quartet (Cuarteto Cuaresma) will perform in the patio on Sunday 7 April at noon.
Premios Gurmé Malaga – these (gourmet) awards are made in recognition of the best dining in Malaga and we’re pleased to see several of our favourite restaurants winning prizes. La Antxoeta in Soho won the award for best creative cooking, La Cosmopolita got the prize for best informal dining and Óleo (next to CAC) the award for best international cuisine.
Natura Malaga – the annual Healthy and Sustainable Living Fair takes places from Friday 5 to Sunday 7 April at the Congress Palace. Stalls selling natural and organic products, ideas for sustainable tourism and workshops on a variety of activities. Plus lots of family activities and workshops specially for kids. Friday and Saturday 11am to 8.30pm and Sunday 11am to 7pm. Tickets available online €3 here or €4 on the door.
New street art – The Italian street artist TV Boy has recently completed 4 new murals in Soho. They’re at the Calle Cordoba end of Calle Vendeja and show 4 famous people from Malaga – Pablo Picasso, Antonio Banderas, Chiquito de la Calzada (comedian) and Dani Rovira (actor and comedian) with his dog. Worth checking out – maybe go at lunchtime or on a Sunday otherwise there’s a queue of traffic in front of them. And as they say, Malaga loves art!
Progress on the Alameda – yes, it’s still a big, big mess at the moment but things are starting to come along on the Alameda Principal. The southern side (to be all pedestrianised) has part of the pavement laid and apparently work is on track for completion by Easter week (14 to 21 April). We can’t wait to see the space when it’s finished.
Terral – someone somewhere must have heard us complaining about how difficult it is to get advance news of events because the programme is already out for the summer Terral festival at the Cervantes Theatre. There’s a great international line-up taking in music and dance from all over the world. Rufus Wainwright, The Chieftains and Mariza are some of the artists at the festival taking place from 22 June to 7 August. Information and tickets available here.
Wisteria – the pergola is now laden with fragrant purple blooms so this weekend and next week are perfect times to visit the botanical gardens in Malaga.
