Floral flirt π¬π§ 'Danger and desire - the seductive power of orchids' is a new exhibition in the Old Laboratory at RHS garden Wisley in Surrey, on from February 8 to May 1. Go soon and you could also check out Wisley's Houseplant Takeover in the glasshouse which is on from tomorrow (February 3).
Bog off π¬π§ I am thrilled that UK charity The Wildlife Trusts have launched a new campaign addressing 'hidden peat' in products, including houseplants, emphasising that peat is far better off in its usual home, a bog. I've been banging on about peat for quite a while, as podcast listeners will know - you can catch up on my coverage of this topic here. (Probably the product that's least known about when it comes to hidden peat, though, is mushrooms.)
In print π¦πΊ I loved this news article about Monstera deliciosa owners in Australia puzzling over 'numbers' seemingly printed on their plants' leaves. The answer, though - pests or physical damage - are slightly less fun than some of the answers being dreamt up online.
Perfume hit πΊπΈ Logees greenhouse in Connecticut put out a newsletter about scented plants this week which included a new-to-me scented houseplant - Aglaia odorata, aka Chinese perfume plant. They have a great video on this plant here. This species is native to southeast Asia including Cambodia, parts of China and Vietnam and is popular there and in the US, but seems impossible to buy in the UK currently, sadly.
Paper delivery π¬π§ Need a new plant-related hobby for 2024? @nicolesjungle has launched a monthly subscription box for anyone who wants to make miniature houseplants from paper... ideal if you can't grow a real Alocasia but want an exquisite paper alternative. Details here.
Role up π¦πΊ π―π΅ The Plant Society are looking for new staffers in Tokyo, Sydney and Melbourne - both 'plant butlers' (not sure what that involves) and retail assistants. Roles and info here.
