1974 vs. now

While completing the dazzling 5th chapter of my comic Mayfield Eight, set in 1974 Albuquerque I ran into a problem. Albuquerque isn't there anymore, at least not the buildings and people that would be consistent with the 1970s. I went on Google Street Views only to find an extensively remodeled and revamped town.

The right time the right place.

Luckily, I found online a photographer Joan Gentry who decades ago shot a black and white photo essay of Albuquerque in 1974 no less! I'm including the link to her website instead of uploading the images in the name of respecting ownership, that's why I took a picture of a hard copy I had around for reference.

Enter Lisa and Moeshea.

The image in question had two girls standing at a street corner. As it so happens, my star character Calvin Ryder is fleeing for his life, zooming around that very street corner. Why not incorporate these two women and give them a quick little story? I gave them names, Lisa and Moeshea. Their back and forth conversation (something about meeting up with 'Po Boy') gets cut short by Calvin's Honda zooming past them.

It shows you that with a little persistence you can come up with interesting odd-ball side details. Have a great weekend!
