Today's Bible Study Lesson
“The
River of Life”
Aim:
Research the biblical
references to the “river of life” to learn its spiritual,
symbolic, and material effect on creation;
Imagine
God’s
provisions to be found in the river of life, which will nourish and
heal people and nations in the New Jerusalem;
and Respond
to
the river of life through acceptance, faith, and entrance into the
fullness of God’s kingdom.
Background:
Revelations 22:1-7
Bible
Lesson:
Revelations
22:1-7
“And
he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal,
proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.” Revelations
22:1 KJV
Some
Highlights:
- The
Apostle John is the author of the Gospel According to John and the
New Testament Books of 1, 2, and 3 John and Revelations. John was
one of Jesus twelve disciples and on many occasions he was referred
to as “the disciple that Jesus loved.” While dying on the cross
for the sins of humankind, Jesus assigned the care of His “earthly
mother” to John. John was a member of Jesus’ inner circle of
disciples, Peter, James, and John who were with Jesus at the Mount
of Transfiguration and in the Garden of Gethsemane. John penned
Revelations while imprisoned on the Isle of Patmos for his faith.
“Patmos
is now known internationally as the “Jerusalem of the Aegean,”
or the “Island of the Apocalypse,” because this is where the
Book of Revelation was written by John, who found refuge on the
island in the 1st century AD.” The Precepts for Living Commentary
introduces this lesson as follows: “The Book of Revelations
records four visions of John. The first vision (1:12-3:22) is of
Jesus and His messages to the seven churches. The second vision
(4:1-13:18) depicts Jesus Christ at the Throne of God, opening the
seven seals. The third vision (14:1-16:21) describes Christ on Mount
Zion.
Our
lesson is
a continuation of John sharing
his
description of his tour of the New Jerusalem as
he experienced in his fourth vision while in the Spirit on the Isle
of Patmos. The
focus is on the river of life, the eternal presence of God, and His
promises which were prophesied by His prophets.
- Revelations
22:1-2,
God’s
Glorious People:
John
continues to describe what he saw in his vision of the New
Jerusalem. His angelic tour guide brought John to the river of life
or
water that was as pure and clear as crystal which was sourced from
the throne of God and the Lamb of God.
This river flowed down the middle of the main street of the New
Jerusalem. On the shores of each side of the river was the tree of
life, which bore twelve varieties of fruit and yield its fruit every
month. The leaves of the tree possessed healing for the nations.
As
it is widely known, water is essential for life, without
it life will cease. Likewise for the inhabitants of the New
Jerusalem, the essence of life comes from God the creator and
sustainer of all creation. Thusly,
the river of life is centrally located and emanates from God to
provide sustenance and refreshment for the saints of God. The tree
of life which was forbidden in the Garden of Eden is now available
for the partaking in the New Jerusalem and there is not a month that
it is not available. As a bonus its leaves have the medicinal power
of healing. Again this shows how God provides everything that the
saints of God need. There is no want or need not provided. Oh what
comfort in knowing that God takes care of His people!
- Revelations
22:3-5,
God’s
Glorious Presence:
The
curse that
Adam and Eve brought upon humankind because of their disobedience is
lifted
in the New Jerusalem. The
eternal presence of God exists with the saints of God. The saints of
God gladly worship and serve Him continually. In the Old Testament,
there was a great fear in seeing the face of God for it would bring
about certain death. Now in the New Jerusalem, the saints of God
will be privileged to see the face of God with no such fears. Each
saint’s thoughts will be continually focused upon God and nothing
else. The Glory of God will continually illuminate the New
Jerusalem. There will be no need for any other source of light. No
longer will there be a time of darkness called night. The saints of
God will possess glorified bodies which might
not require rest and rejuvenation that
night allows
for our human bodies. The
presence of God with His saints will be an eternal state. Oh what
assurance in knowing that God is ever present with his people!
-
Revelations
22:6-7,
God’s
Glorious Promise:
John’s
angelic tour guide assured him that what he has
seen, heard and experienced were
faithful and true. These sayings had been shared in the past by God
sent prophets foretelling
things to come. John
is cautioned to be
ready
for the coming of Christ, which
will be swift. The
swift coming of Christ
exhorts the saints of God to be diligent in serving Him and adhering
to
His
Word. He exclaims how blessed the saints are when
obeying
the teachings and commands of God, both those
documented
in God’s Word and those
provided
by God’s
illumination for our minds and spirits. Oh what confidence the
saints can
have
in the God’s Promises for the present
and the future!
Take
Aways:
- What
glorious provisions have been prepared for God’s saints!
- Just
as God has been the Sustainer for all creation, He will continue as
the Ultimate Sustainer in the New Jerusalem
- God’s
Word is true and His Promises are certain. Saints can be totally
confident in our God!
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“But
as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have
entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for
them that love him.” 1 Corinthians
2:9 KJV
“Thy
faithfulness [is] unto all generations: thou hast established the
earth, and it abideth.” Psalm
119:90
KJV
“The
eyes of all look to you in hope; you give them their food as they
need it. When you open your hand, you satisfy the hunger and thirst
of every living thing.” Psalms
145:15-16 NLT
“But
they that wait upon the LORD shall renew [their] strength; they shall
mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary;
[and] they shall walk, and not faint.” Isaiah
40:31 KJV
“That
ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he
maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain
on the just and on the unjust.” Matthew
5:45 KJV
“Know
ye that the LORD he [is] God: [it is] he [that] hath made us, and not
we ourselves; [we are] his people, and the sheep of his pasture.”
Psalm
100:3 KJV
“I
will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
My help [cometh] from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.”
Psalm
121:1-2 KJV
