Harlem Jazz Series - Keith Witty

New York native, bassist Keith Witty has straddled the worlds of Hip-Hop, popular music forms, and Jazz’s Avante Garde in his young career. Before graduating in 2000 from Wesleyan University, he made his recording debut with the Anthony Braxton Quartet, followed by work in the bands of Guillermo E. Brown and David S. Ware. Keith’s first engagement with Ware was the Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony for Sonny Rollins and Max Roach, with both legends in attendance. In 2007, Keith formally joined Ware's new quartet. That same year, he joined the touring band of Grammy-nominated singer and song-writer Amel Larrieux, with whom he has toured extensively. In 2010, Keith joined the band of acclaimed East African vocalist, Somi, and simultaneously, Keith has collaborated with some of the most innovative musicians of Jazz’s upcoming generation, playing in bands led by Matana Roberts, Taylor Ho Bynum, Pyeng Threadgill, and Jonathan Finlayson. A dedicated educator, Keith was the New York City Opera Education Program's composer-in-residence for 10 years.

Harlem Jazz Series - Roman Filiu

New York-based Roman Filiú has been a saxophonist, bandleader, composer for over 20 years. Born and raised in Santiago de Cuba, he has played, recorded, and toured worldwide with a variety of artists. Currently, a member of Henry Threadgill's Ensemble Double Up, and Roman leads several groups himself such as Quarteria, as well as the Roman Filiú Quartet. Among his many collaborations, Román has played in Chucho Valdés' Irakere, has been the musical director of David Murray´s Big Band and has played with outstanding musicians, Andrew Cyrille, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Steve Coleman, Dafnis Prieto, Milford Graves, Miguel Zenón, Doug Hammond, Nasheet Waits, Michele Rosewoman, Omara PorFtuondo, Marcus Gilmore, Lázaro Ross, Alain Pérez, Iván Melón Lewis, Román Díaz, Damion Reid, Pablo Milanés, Liberty Ellman, Stephan Crump, Pepe Rivero, Adam Rogers, Rez Abassi, Roy Hargrove, and Chano Domínguez to name a few. The musician has been a recipient of the Jazz Gallery Commission Series, the Langnau Jazz Fest Artist in Residence, the Chamber Music America New Jazz Works Award, and the Lucas Artist Residency.

Mambo Legends Orchestra with special guest artist, Gilberto Santo Rosa

Palladium Era took place in the late 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s it was dedicated to the Big Band music. The famous Palladium Ballroom highlighted the Big Band Latin Orchestras and the creation of mambo and cha-cha dances took place at that time. These orchestras build the foundation of the tradition of Latin music not only in New York City but around the globe. Mambo Legends are paying tribute to this great era together with Gilberto Santa Rosa who has a deep respect for the artists and the orchestras of this special era of music making.

The former musicians of the Tito Puente Orchestra have come together as the Mambo Legends Orchestra. The Mambo Legends Orchestra brings all of its incredible musicians together under their new name to bring their music to an international audience and to further explore the music which they have been masters of playing for over 30 years. The Mambo Legends Orchestra is led by John ‘Dandy’ Rodriguez, Mitch Frohman and musically directed by Jose Madera, each having spent over 25 years working with Tito Puente.
