“Man Considers Mayonnaise”
A friend of mine is visiting her kid in New Zealand and she sent me a photo of her trip to the grocery store. A big jar of mayonnaise cost over $21. I nearly fell out of my seat. A similar amount here would run about $7. Once I scraped myself up from the floor, it got me to thinking about how my various characters would react to a $20 jar of mayonnaise.
Dixon (The ABC’s of Spellcraft) would definitely experience some sticker shock, as Spellcrafters are notoriously thrifty. He’d try to figure out a creative win-win situation using some sort of Spellcraft barter. His partner, Yuri, would refuse to pay such an exorbitant price and try to make it himself from scratch…only to be discouraged when Dixon, grossed out by the raw egg, would refuse to go anywhere near it.
Jacob (PsyCop) would take it as a sign that should look for a healthier option, like Greek yogurt, perhaps. While Crash would rant and rave about the brokenness of the system, while secretly wondering if he should get it over with and go full-on vegan, despite cheese being one of his few real vices. Victor Bayne, meanwhile, would be busy trying to figure out if that was a preternatural chill he felt on the back of his neck or if the HVAC system is just on the fritz. If he noticed the $20 charge at all, he would presume it was some sort of glitch in the system and make a point to talk to customer service about it…and then promptly lose the receipt and forget about the whole thing.
As for me, I’d probably take a trip to the scratch-and-dent clearance grocery store and end up spending way more than $20 on weird, stale, expired stuff I didn’t need. But I usually take my friend with me and she’s in New Zealand, so maybe by the time she got back I’d at least find a decent coupon for the regular store.
