Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Freedom
from Sin”
Aim: Explore what it means to live by grace rather than
living under the law;
Discern
how following Jesus can impact the way they handle these temptations
and sins, and Choose
to live in the power of Jesus’ life and resurrection.
Background:
Romans 6:1-14
Bible Lesson:
Romans
6:1-14
“For
if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we
shall be also [in the likeness] of [his] resurrection:” Romans 6:5
KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
Our Study comes from Apostle
Paul’s Epistle or Letter to the believers
in Rome.
He wrote this letter while he was in Corinth. Paul’s life before
his
conversion on the Damascus Road included the
persecution
of Christians. After
his conversion which
also included his name
being changed from Saul to Paul and
he endured
persecution for sharing the
Gospel. Paul became just as
dedicated to sharing the Gospel as he was to persecuting Christians.
Paul’s Letter forcefully explains that whether Jew or Gentile, all
are sinners in need of salvation. He declares that the only path to
salvation is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ through faith
and complete obedience to Him. In Chapter 6, Paul declares that
rather than being Slaves to Sin, we are dying to Sin, if we are in
Christ (6:1-14) and
we have become Slaves to God (6:15-23).
-
Romans
6:1-4, Baptized with Christ: In
Romans 5:18, Paul
confirms that the Adamaic
or Original
Sin that
besets all humankind needed
to be dealt with, because God requires justice. Thanks
be to God, He provided Jesus, the Perfect Payment for our sin debt
and
one only needs to accepts
Him as Lord and Savior. In 5:20,
he states that where sin abounds or is present there
is much
more Grace available from God. Paul opens Chapter 6, with the
question should
a believer continue in sin to bring about more Grace, God’s
unmerited favor from? He
answers his own question with an emphatic No! Why, because as a
believer, one has died to sin. If one is dead to something how can
one continue to live in it. Paul
then reminds the reader that as believers, we joined Christ Jesus in
baptism, the submergence symbolizes a believer’s identification
with Jesus’ burial after His crucifixion on the cross. The
emergence from the watery grave in baptism symbolizes a resurrection
from the dead. Jesus was buried after His
death on the cross that
put an end to sin’s hold on humankind for those who accept Him as
Lord and Savior. At Jesus’
resurrection, He possessed All power in
Heaven and on Earth.
At our symbolic resurrection, a believer no longer faces
sin alone because s/he is empowered by God to boldly
face sin’s temptations. This resurrection also marks the beginning
of a new life with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
-
Romans
6:5-11, Crucified with Christ: Jesus’
death on the cross was not for sins that He had committed. He was
our substitue,
for we did deserved
death for our sins. Our
faith in Jesus enables us to accept the gift of the
payment for our sins
through
Jesus’
death on the cross. Our faith, which is a gift from God, further
breaks the bond that sin has held since the Original
Sin
in the Garden of Eden. In other words, a believer is no longer a
slave to sin! Sin no longer possesses power over a believer. Jesus
did not just die, but He rose from the dead to never die again. I
say again, Jesus rose with All Power in Heaven and on
Earth! As a believer identifies with Jesus’ death, likewise a
believer identifies with His resurrection from the dead. No longer
does death have power over a believer because of Jesus’ victory
over death. Jesus lives to the Glory of God. A believer’s new life
should also be
lived to the Glory of God.
-
Romans
6:12-14,
New Life with Christ: Paul
urges the reader to not let sin control how we as believers live. He
encourages us to not let our sinful fleshly desires control the way
we live. He specifically exhorts the reader to not let any member of
our body to become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Let us
consider what our eyes see, what our minds think, where our feet can
take us, or what our hands can reach. Instead of yielding to evil
temptation, focus all
our efforts in
seeking to please God with all your heart, mind, and body. Let
us live our new lives to the Glory of God as an instrument of His to
do that which is good and acceptable to Him. As a final reminder,
Paul states that rather than being under
the Law, a believer is under God’s Grace which affords a believer
the freedom to serve Him. The Law was not intended to provide
salvation, but was a school
master to show how
far one is
from being in the Will of
God.
Faith in Jesus Christ’s birth, life, death, and resurrection
provides a believer with salvation from the
power of sin, penalty of
sin, and eventually the presence of sin. Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah!
Take
Aways:
-
Believers are no longer under
the Law, but instead are under God’s Grace which gives us freedom
to serve Him.
-
A believer’s relationship
with God includes gratitude for Jesus’ act on Calvary and for His
absence from the Tomb on the first day of the week. He rose with All
power in Heaven and on Earth!
-
Baptism symbolizes Jesus’
burial and resurrection and our participation shows our
identification with Jesus, Our Lord and Savior. A believer’s new
life is dead to sin and a live with the objective of serving to the
Glory of God!
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“For
the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of God [is] eternal life
through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans
6:23 KJV
“Therefore,
if anyone [is] in Christ, [he is] a new creation; old things have
passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians
5:17 NKJV
“For
sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but
under grace.” Romans
6:14 NKJV
“Now
if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him,
knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more.
Death no longer has dominion over Him.” Romans
6:8-9 NKJV
“No
temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God
[is] faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you
are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape,
that you may be able to bear [it].” 1 Corinthians
10:13 NKJV
“For
in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid
those who are tempted.” Hebrews
2:18 NKJV
“There
is a way [that seems] right to a man, But its end [is] the way of
death.” Proverbs
14:12 NKJV
“Enter
by the narrow gate; for wide [is] the gate and broad [is] the way
that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.”
Mat thew
7:13
NKJV
“I
say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of
the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit
against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you
do not do the things that you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit,
you are not under the law.” Galatians
5:16-18
NKJV
“Do
not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the
world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that [is] in the
world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of
life--is not of the Father but is of the world.” 1 John
2:15-16 NKJV
