COVID-19 Support

Since March, our members work at the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic and provide essential care and support. All across Europe, JOIN members are taking various measures to help all people in these difficult times. Find an overview of all activities in our regularly updated segment COVID-19 Support.

JOIN Board meets online

On 15th May, the Board of Johanniter International met online to discuss the current situation and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on JOIN activities. The organisation of the JOIN Annual General Meeting (AGM) was discussed with the decision to hold a formal AGM online on 12th June and if circumstances allow, to hold the meeting planned in Cyprus in October. The JOIN Office gave feedback on the working groups’ activities, including the regular update of our members’ activities and the changes to the Volunteer Swap programme. Impact of the pandemic

The current COVID-19 pandemic has a profound impact on everyone. People are advised to avoid big events and gathering as well as travels especially. Our Volunteer Swap program is right at the centre of this and several opportunities are affected. Germany: Johanniter survey highlights dangers for women due to COVID-19 in Afghanistan

Johanniter International Assistance and partner organisations in Afghanistan conducted a representative survey on COVID-19 among Afghan health workers. By mid-May, thirteen health workers have died in this country, and more than 871 tested positive. The pandemic has worsened the treatment situation, especially for women. Most Venerable Order of St John: worldwide response to COVID-19

In more than 36 countries around the world, St John is fighting at the frontline against COVID-19. Volunteers and staff are supporting national health systems, which otherwise would not be able to cope with the virus and its effects on the local population. Find more information here.

The Netherlands: Postcard campaign for people in isolation

To make a difference to residents of Dutch nursing homes and healthcare institutions who cannot have direct contact with their relatives and loved ones, Johanniter Nederland started a postcard campaign. About 4,500 postcards have been distributed to various Johanniter volunteer groups. They were then sent to elderly people who now live in isolation and volunteers who cannot do their work. Johanniter Germany attends the VOICE General Assembly 2020

On 13th May, the VOICE General Assembly 2020 was held in the form of an online video conference. This General Assembly brought together over 85 European NGOs to discuss future and past activities, as well as current policies and trends in the humanitarian aid sector. The Director of Johanniter International Assistance attended the online meeting from Berlin. More information here.
