Today's Bible Study Lesson
Unity in the Body of Christ
Aim:
Explore characteristics
of a life worthy of Christ’s calling in building up the body of
Christ;
Celebrate
our
gifts that help build up the body of Christ;
and Understand
the
meaning of the statement “.. one faith, one baptism, one God and
Father of all” as it relates to building up the body of Christ..
Background:
Ephesians
4:1-16
Bible
Lesson:
Ephesians
4:1-16
“There
is] one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of
your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism,” Ephesians
4:4-5 KJV
Some
Highlights:
- The
Book of Ephesians was a letter written by Paul during his
imprisonment. Scholars believe that it was intended for a wider
readership than that of the church at Ephesus and it is believed to
have been circulated among many churches in the Roman province. This
lesson finds Paul pleading
with the readers for unity in the Body of Christ.
-
Ephesians
4:1-6,
The Church’s
Calling to Unity:
Chapter
4, begins with the word “Therefore” which ties the content of
this chapter with the content of Chapter 3. The
last portion of Chapter 3 immediately prior to Chapter 4
includes
a prayer for Spiritual Strength. Paul begs the readers to live lives
worthy of their calling into the Body of Christ. He proceeds to
describe what
he means by living worthy which includes exhibiting humility,
gentleness, and
patience
giving allowance for each other because of love for our fellow
members of the household of faith. We are to be intentional in
preserving the unity in the Spirit as we are bound together in
peace. What necessitates unity in Christ? There is one body and one
Spirit in which we are all called in one hope for the future.
Likewise,
there is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father, who
is over all and in all and living through all.
- Ephesians
4:7-12,
The
Church’s Gifts:
God
has given each believer a special spiritual gift through Jesus
Christ’s generosity. God gave his Only Begotten Son to come down
from Glory to reconcile humankind to Himself. Paul describes the
Spiritual gifts given to the church as
apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. The ages
of apostleship and prophets has pasted
and the age of evangelists, pastors and teachers continues in this
present age. These gifts were not intended to only benefit those
blessed with these gifts, but to equip God’s people to do God’s
work and to build up the church, the body of Christ. God provides
for His people in each stage of His Divine Plan for humankind’s
salvation.
-
Ephesians
4:13-16,
The
Road to Maturity:
God’s
objective is for all of His people to come to
a
faith and
knowledge of God’s Son that we may become mature
in the Lord reaching a full and complete standard of Jesus Christ.
We are
to
no longer be immature as children in our faith such that we will be
tossed and blown about by every wind of new doctrine or influenced
by false teachers who attempt to deceive with clever or cunning
words that sound like the truth. Instead,
we are to speak the truth in love and to grow more and more like
Jesus Christ, who is the head of the
body
of Christ, His Church. The
whole body is perfectly held together by Jesus Christ. When each
member of the body of Christ endeavors to carryout his/her assigned
role, the whole body is allowed to
be
healthy and to continue to grow full of love. Oh, how
beautiful it
is
when
Christians work harmoniously
together in God’s church!
Take
Aways:
-
All Christians are called to live in a manner which pleases and
represents God Our Father.
-
God has given each believer at least one Spiritual Gift
-
We should seek to identify our Spiritual Gift(s) and use it/them to
the Glory of God and endeavoring to do our part to preserve the
Unity of the Body of Christ
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Be
anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication,
with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the
peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your
hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians
4:6-7 NKJV
“For
as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of
that one body, being many, are one body: so also [is] Christ. For by
one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether [we be] Jews or
Gentiles, whether [we be] bond or free; and have been all made to
drink into one Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many.”
1 Corinthians
12:12-14 KJV
“And
above all things have fervent love for one another, for "love
will cover a multitude of sins."” 1 Peter
4:8 NKJV
“Who
then is Paul, and who [is] Apollos, but ministers by whom ye
believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? I have planted,
Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he
that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that
giveth the increase. Now he that planteth and he that watereth are
one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own
labour.” 1 Corinthians
3:5-8 KJV
“Behold,
how good and how pleasant [it is] for brethren to dwell together in
unity!” Psalms
133:1 KJV
