- Launched Negro History Week in 1926, chosen in the second week of February between the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, which evolved into Black History Month in 1976
- Known for writing the contributions of black Americans into the national spotlight, received a PhD at Harvard University
- Founded the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History in 1915, founded the Journal of Negro History 1916
Woodson believed the study of black history, using the tools of scholarly research and writing, could serve a dual purpose. It could be used to counter white racial chauvinism, which was used to rationalize the oppression of black people in America. The distortion and deletions in the American historical record as it pertains to race matters, Woodson believed, was detrimental to the health of a nation whose inherent promise is life, liberty and justice for all. "Besides building self-esteem among blacks, (Black History Week) would help eliminate prejudice among whites," Woodson concluded (The Black World Today).

Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Nathan
Condemns David”
Aim: Explore
how
sin’s
consequences
extend beyond the individual and bring hurt to God and others;
Address
sin
and the injustices that occur as a result;
and Admit
our
sins, ask God’s forgiveness, and make godly choices.
Background:
2
Samuel
12
Bible Lesson:
2
Samuel
12:1-9,
13-15
Memory
Verse:
“And Nathan said to David, Thou [art] the man. . . .”
2 Samuel
12:7b
Some
Highlights:
-
The
Books of 1st
and 2nd
Samuel
are
credited
to the prophet Samuel. The
portions of 2 Samuel which record events after Samuel’s death are
credited to a priest who had access to the royal records. The
personalities of our study are King David and the prophet Nathan.
King David who was the youngest of Jesse’s eight sons. David was
a shepherd, a musician, a warrior, and finally King of Israel. God’s
favor was upon David’s life began
at
an early age. When David replaced Saul as King, it was stated
that David was a man after God’s own heart. Our Study which is
from 2 Samuel 12, deals with the tragic events
of Chapter 11. King David stays home while his men fight the
Ammonites. A
beautiful woman bathing on her roof top catches King David’s eye
and he succumbs to his carnal nature. Even
though she is another man’s wife, he commits adultery with her.
The adulterous act conceived a child. King David sought
to
cover up his sin by bringing Bathsheba's husband, Uriah, a soldier
back from battle hoping
that the couple would make love and assume that the child that was
already conceived was
Uriah’s. However, Uriah’s dedication as
a soldier would
not allow him to lie with his wife while his fellow soldiers were in
harms way in battle. After
his first coverup plan failed,
King David planned
to murder Uriah
at
the hands of the Ammonites. He sent Uriah back to battle with a
message for
his commander that
directed Uriah
be
placed on
the front line of the most fierce area of the battle and then have
the other soldiers withdraw leaving him to be slain. Once word from
the battle came that Uriah was slain and Bathsheba mourned the death
of her husband, King David took her as his wife.
-
Our
lessons opens with the prophet Nathan visiting
King David. Nathan tells King David a story of a rich man and his
poor
neighbor. The rich man had a large flock of
sheep and herds of cattle and the poor man had a
single
lamb, which he loved dearly and cared for like his own child. A
guest came to visit the rich man and rather than
preparing a meal from his own flock or herd, he took the poor man’s
only lamb, killed it, and prepared a meal for his guest.
-
King
David was very familiar with the care and devotion required
with a lamb. The
thought of the rich man taking the poor man’s only lamb infuriated
him. His
immediate response was that the rich man should be held accountable
for his cruel act by
being
executed
and the poor man should be repaid with four lambs because the rich
man had shown no pity or compassion toward the poor man.
-
After
King David declared the
punishment
for the rich man in Nathan’s story, Nathan boldly stated
“You are the man!” Now
Nathan recounted God’s goodness toward
David.
God
protected him
from
King Saul’s ruthless attempts to take David’s life. God
gave King
Saul’s kingdom including his palace, wives, and all his
possessions
to David.
God’s message through Nathan further exclaimed that God would have
even been more generous if King David had asked
for more.
-
Nathan
then asked the most piercing
question of King David, why would you disregard God’s law and
commit such horrible acts? Nathan gets specific and recounts
the
details of his sins.
King David committed
adultery with Bathsheba, murdered
her
husband, Uriah,
at the hands of the Ammonites and stole Uriah’s
wife.
-
King
David immediately admitted his guilt with no excuses or attempts
to
justify
his behavior. He just flatly
stated “I have sinned against the LORD!”
-
Nathan
acknowledged
King
David’s
admission;
however, he
announced that God
had forgiven King David. The
Levitical law recorded in Leviticus
20:10; 24:17, 21
called for the
death
penalty
to anyone who committed adultery and/or murder. Beyond forgiving
King David, God also commuted
his sentence of death. However, there would be consequences for his
sins.
The child born to King David and Bathsheba would die. After Nathan
had left the presence of King David, the child became deathly ill
and died. The
death of the child marked the beginning of many unhappy family
situations for King David including his own son’s attempt to
overthrow him as king.
Take
Aways:
-
Nothing
is hidden
from the awareness of the True Living God
-
God
is merciful; however, sin comes with consequences
-
Admission
of one’s sin and a request for forgiveness initiates God’s Mercy
and Grace
Bible

have set our iniquities before You, Our secret [sins] in the light of
