England face Spain in UEFA Euro 2024 final on Sunday |
|
In case you’ve been living under a rock this week, football may very well be coming home if the men's England squad can follow in the Lioness’ footsteps and win this Sunday’s UEFA Euro 2024 final against Spain at 8pm.
If you want to soak up the atmosphere of a buzzing crowd in front of a big screen – plus the celebratory pints likely to be thrown if former Weston-super-Mare scorer Ollie Watkins (pictured above) manages to repeat his winning goal from Wednesday – then we’ve chosen some places that currently still have space. You’ll have to be quick though, as spots are getting booked up fast…

Words by Melissa Blease
Peach Posset
A sweet, rich, fruity treat – the peach-perfect finale to a summer Sunday roast, perhaps?
Ingredients (serves 4)
2 large, just-ripe peaches 1 tbsp brandy 1 tbsp light brown sugar 150ml double cream 40g caster sugar The finely-grated zest and juice of ½ large, unwaxed lemon To serve (optional): finely-chopped fresh mint leaves
Method
1. Plunge the peaches into a bowl of boiling water for around 30 seconds, or until the skin just starts to peel away. Carefully remove from the bowl using a slotted spoon and dip immediately into cold water for another 30 seconds. Dry with a clean tea towel and peel off the skin.
2. Cut the peach flesh into neat dice. cubes. Put into a bowl, add the brandy and the brown sugar and toss well. Divide among 4 small tumblers and set to one side.
3. Meanwhile, pour the cream into a small, heavy-bottomed saucepan. Add the caster sugar, lemon zest and juice and heat over a medium heat, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Allow to simmer for 2 minutes (stirring continuously), then pour into a jug and set aside to cool until lukewarm.
4. Pour the lemon cream over the fruit. Transfer to the fridge and allow to set for at least 4 hours or – ideally – overnight. Serve decorated with chopped fresh mint.

WEEKEND WINES | WINE DOWN AND CHILE OUT
|
|
|
|
Chilean red wines at The Great Wine Co.
Rolled out like a red carpet along the western coast of South America, Chile's odd and strikingly subliminal topography has made it winemaking royalty. With the majestic Andes to the east, the choppy Pacific to west, an arid desert plateau to the north, a host of Antarctic snow-capped volcanoes to the south, and finally a lush alluvial fertile valley sandwiched somewhere in the middle, Chile couldn't be more interesting for the visiting vinophile. But the consistency and quality of Chilean wine comes not only from its breathtaking geography, but as a result of an eager and enthusiastic group of winemakers who have begun to truly understand their terroir by establishing the right grapes in the right place.

Curated by Daniel McCabe
You may or may not know that the indie film streaming platform MUBI publishes its own magazine. It’s called Notebook and it's focused not only on cinema itself but more widely on related artistic and cultural happenings. In the end, though, the whole endeavour is clearly aimed at exploring and celebrating the beauty of film. We’ve begun stocking Notebook from its fifth issue, which examines the ‘making' and ‘doing' aspects of film, providing tips on how to create your own cinema space, recipes for developing film sustainably, the art of drawing cartoons, the methodology of fake blood and blood effects, and a taxonomy of falls in silent films. Notebook is conceptual, practical, informative and, we have to say, handsomely produced. | £19.99

Bristol Improv Theatre launches urgent fundraiser to secure its future
The Bristol Improv Theatre has announced it is under threat of closure within the next three months, launching a fundraising campaign with the goal of raising £20,000.
If the team is successful in securing the £20,000 needed to keep their doors open, their long-term plans include making their building’s public spaces fully accessible, expanding their community work across Bristol and becoming a hub for developing new improvised theatre performances. But their first step is to fundraise and restructure to keep the organisation running in a way that is financially stable.
The ‘Save the Bristol Improv Theatre’ campaign will be running until late September. The theatre is hosting a charity fundraiser event on Friday 26 July as part of its Improv Appreciation weekend.
