Graham Downs :: Monthly Newsletter

May 2019

Hi there,

I'm back, baby!

What a month this has been. Can you believe I read five books this month? How many did you manage?

I also made a decision earlier this month that landed me in a bit of hot water, and wrote a blog post about it. You can read the blog post further down, but basically, I will no longer be buying any books from Amazon if I see they're in Kindle Unlimited. Time to take a stand, and put my money where my mouth is! By the way, there's also a blog post about a great KU alternative you can sign up for, and a special offer from me, to get two free months.

Oh, and I'm also toying with placing a small sponsored link in my monthly newsletter. You can see the first one below. If it doesn't work, or you guys really hate it, I'll stop. This is just an experiment - I make a little money if you click on those ads, so I hope they show you useful stuff.

Anyway, enough of my prattling. Onward with this month's news! :-)

Finances: April 2019

Gee, I had a good month in April, hey! I made some decent money from people clicking on ads on my website, and sold some books: a copy of Heaven and Earth: Paranormal Flash Fiction at Amazon US, and three copies of Memoirs of a Guardian Angel - one at Amazon US, one at Amazon Australia, and one at Google Play Books.

Here are the figures. As always, all amounts have been converted to South African Rands, using the exchange rate at the time of this writing.

  • Income:   R  49.34
  • Expenses: R  38.97
  • Profit:   R  10.37

Thank you so much for all your support. Unfortunately, May so far is looking pretty bleak again, so please don't stop: buy my books, recommend them to your friends, and post reviews online for other potential customers to see.

Earn Commission from my Books

Many online retailers also offer affiliate programmes, where you can earn commission for getting people to buy books there. I personally use Amazon's, Smashwords', and Loot's affiliate programmes. If this sounds like something you'd be interested in, just reply to this mail and ask me how.

Featured Author

Suneé Le Roux

This month's featured author is Suneé Le Roux, a South African author of Urban and High Fantasy Short Stories.

Suneé lives with her Welsh husband, a 2-year-old son, and a black Labrador named Loki.

Ever since she was little Suneé has been a voracious reader. She was 10 years old when she first read The Hobbit, after which she devoured The Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, and every fantasy book she could lay her hands on. David Eddings, Robert Jordan, Robin Hobb, George RR Martin… She was in love with these fantasy worlds and she would have done anything to be able to live in them (which of course, led to a love for MMORPG games, but we won’t talk about that right now!).

She soon realised that these books, with their wonderful worlds and their fascinating characters, made her enormously happy, and she wanted nothing more than to create stories of her own that would mean as much to her readers as the stories of her favourite authors meant to her.

Making that dream a reality has been a long journey. Doubts and fears prevented her from sharing her work with others – after all, everyone knew she was a writer, so if she wrote something it had better be bloody good! And what if it weren’t? She couldn’t face the disappointment. And she used the excuse of a busy life whenever anybody asked about her writing.

Then, one day, all that changed. Suneé realised she could no longer live a life unfulfilled. This is her life’s passion and she needed to pursue it. She quit her full-time job and spent half a year writing for a living. Unfortunately, while this was creatively satisfying, it didn’t pay the bills, so she's back in the corporate world again, but things are different this time. This time she will continue writing, because she can no longer not write.

Suneé hopes you’ll share this journey with her and hopes you enjoy reading her stories.

Spirit Caller

Teva knows something is wrong in her village. The cold winter months approach and yet no crops have sprouted, nor have the great elk returned to roam the plains. Nothing but dust flows between the banks of the once mighty river Einuhuatl, and all the animals guarding her village have fled. Have the spirits of the earth abandoned them?

Only the Spirit Caller will know.

To save her village, Teva journeys to the forest in search of the woman who can speak to the spirits. Together, they must confront the Eater of Souls, or face the death of everything Teva holds dear...

To find out where you can get a copy of Suneé's book, Spirit Caller, click on the cover above.

You can also get a free copy of Keeper of Exotic Animals, the prequel story in her Mythical Menagerie series, if you sign up for Suneé's newsletter at http://suneeleroux.com/.

Despite being known for short stories, Suneé's first full-length novel is in the works, and should be released by the end of the year. Another reason to sign up for her newsletter; I'm sure she'll tell you all about it!

Month in Books

As I mentioned earlier, I managed to get through five books this month. But this month, I'm going to present them differently. You can click on any of the covers below to visit my review of the book at Goodreads, where you'll also find links to get your hands on a copy of each book. Also, the Featured Book slot has been removed, because all the covers now link to my review.
