November 2020

Dear Reader,

We are living in such strange times that wishing you a "Happy Thanksgiving" is hardly sufficient to convey my feelings. I hope you are safe and healthy, and that however you celebrate the holiday, you find joy and feel the love of friends and family, even from afar.

This year, I'm going rogue. Instead of turkey and trimmings, I'm making one of my favorite comfort dishes, Ina Garten's chicken pot pie. I add potatoes to the recipe, plus fresh thyme to taste. And I use prepared pastry. I think it's just as good as homemade. Not that I've ever made homemade pastry. :)

I have a lot to be grateful for this year. My husband and I still have jobs. I've safely seen my immediate family twice since the pandemic started, and we are all healthy. And on the lighthearted side, my 86-year-old father and his wife have learned how to position themselves so we can see them both during our weekly Zoom calls! It is the small things and the quiet moments that fill my heart.

In the spirit of small, sweet blessings, I've compiled some holiday-infused content for you: Ideas to boost the dreaded annual Christmas letter, suggestions for books to give as presents, a Black Friday book sale, and a list of clean Christmas reads.

My Thanksgiving Tradition

Many people put up the Christmas tree after dinner on Thanksgiving. I'm always too stuffed to move, much less haul out the decorations, but it is my tradition to start writing Christmas cards on Thanksgiving day evening. Check out these ideas from Hallmark for writing a creative holiday letter.

Book Gift Ideas

To help you find the perfect book for everyone on your list, I’ve compiled a list on Pinterest of 101 books I love. There is a little bit of everything: General fiction, sweet romance, uplifting women's fiction, science, historical non-fiction, middle-grade and young adult, suspense, cozy mystery, biographies, and of course books about dogs. Enjoy!

And for the teen readers in your life, check out my young adult novel, Stealing Away.

Here's a great article about creative ways to "wrap" an ebook.
