Looking southwest from the monastery, one sees the silhouette of the mountain range, summited by Mount Waialeale, the highest peak on the island at 5,200 feet. This is an unusually colorful sunset.

Message from Satguru
In December we had an over abundance of visitors, so many that we need to hire a security guard to control visitor parking! Our monthly Ardra abhishekam to Lord Nataraja and chitra pada puja to Gurudeva were held. On December 17 we started the third ritau of the year—moksha ritau—with pre-dawn homa followed by raising the coral-colored flag. The study during this ritau is Merging with Siva. During my weekly Zoom satsangs I gave a three-part presentation on the topic “Satkarma, Bhakti and Jnanam.” It is a talk presented at a January 8 gathering at Kailash Ashram in Bengaluru. In the talk, jnana is defined as Paramatma darshana—jivatma experiencing itself as Paramatma. The talk introduces the steps to be accomplished before being able to experience Paramatma darshana. The first is controlling anger and other base emotions. Then comes satkarma—being charitable and performing seva. Next is bhakti—worship at the temple and the home shrine. Third is meditation. Only after mastering all these is the final step of jnanam, spiritual knowing, achievable. General contributions for December totaled $177,142.27, which is more than our minimum monthly goal of $75,000.
Aum Namasivaya,
- Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami.

From Gurudeva's Teachings
Spiritual unfoldment is not a process of awakening the higher chakras, but of closing the chakras below the muladhara. Once this happens, the aspirant’s consciousness slowly expands into the higher chakras, which are always there. The only thing that keeps the lower chakras closed is regular sadhana, japa, worship and working within oneself. This is demonstrated by the fact that even great yogīs and rishis who have awakened into the higher chakras continue to do more and more sadhana. They are constantly working to keep the forces flowing through the higher centers so that the lower ones do not claim their awareness. Now, all of this perhaps seems very complex and esoteric. But these are aspects of our nature that we use every day. We use our arms and hands every day without thinking. If we study the physiology of the hands, we encounter layer after layer of intricate interrelationships of tissues, cells, plasma. We examine the engineering of the structural system of bones and joints, the energy transmission of the muscular system, the biochemistry of growth and healing, the biophysics of nerve action and reaction. Suddenly a simple and natural part of human life, the function of the hands, seems complex. Similarly, we use the various functions of consciousness, the chakras, every day without even thinking about them

The Avudaiyar which sits in the inner sanctum of Iraivan Temple

The Crystal Lingam has been temporarily residing in Kadavul Temple since August 1987. Our architect, Selvanathan Sthapati, has indicated that now that the Iraivan Temple structure is complete and the 11,000-pound panchaloha Avudaiyar base has been moved into the inner sanctum, we need to not delay in installing the Crystal Lingam. Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami has set the crystal installation rituals for March 21-26, 2023. Access to Iraivan Temple for the event will be through the monastery, utilizing our existing parking lot of 37 spaces. Our maximum capacity of confirmed attendees has already been reached and no one will be allowed in who is not already on the list). We apologize for this limitation, but the existing facilities of the aadheenam and Iraivan Temple do not allow for large crowds, which would create substantial issues for us with our neighbors and the county over traffic and parking. However, we have hired a videography team to live stream the event so everyone, wherever they live in the world, may attend digitally. Even after the crystal installation, in order to invite visitors to attend Iraivan’s daily puja, we need to comply with Kauai County Planning and Building department’s expectations to finish the forest parking lot, install proper bathrooms and upgrade the San Marga path so pilgrims can comfortably walk the 0.6 miles from the Rudraksha Forest south to the Wailua River and east to the Iraivan Temple entry steps. This infrastructure will take a few more years to complete, at which time the Big Event, the Swarna Bandhana Maha Kumbhabhishekam, will take place

The red granite tile being installed at Iraivan Temple
Our three silpis spent over two months transforming the Nandi Mandapam of Kadavul temple, placing an entirely new balipitham base and adding intricately carved cladding around the base of Nandi and the kodimaram. Three priests were flown in to bless the project and transfer the spiritual energy back into the these elements of the temple. Out at Iraivan, the team installing the rose-colored granite tile floor is gaining momentum. They are now working on the floor in front of the temple.
The entrance stairway leading up to the temple from the Wailua River is now complete. It has taken fifteen months of concrete, rock and tile work, not to mention the installation of the massive elephants. One day, this will be the way most pilgrims approach Iraivan Temple.

In December we honored the completion of Sannyasin Brahmanathaswami’s incarnation for this birth as a sannyasin of the Saiva Siddhanta Yoga Order. On December 22nd at 10pm, Swami left his body, transitioning into Siva’s world of light. Less than 24 hours later, at 12:33pm on December 23, Swami’s remains were given a traditional departure ceremony followed by a swift cremation—all overseen by an entourage of twelve Saiva sannyasins. For our monks, this is not a time of mourning or grief, but a time to celebrate a long life well lived, brought to completion in a natural and noble way. The Tirukural succinctly says, “The soul’s attachment to the body is like that of a fledgling, which forsakes its empty shell and flies away.”

The Four Stages on the Path |
Mandala Eight of Dancing with Siva explains: “The path of enlightenment is divided naturally into four stages: charya, virtue and selfless service; kriya, worshipful sadhanas; yoga, meditation under a guru’s guidance; and jnana, the wisdom state of the realized soul.” These four stages are depicted on pillar 13 of Iraivan temple, just to the left as one enters.
“Charya, kriya, yoga and jnana are the sequence of the soul’s evolutionary process, much like the natural development of a butterfly from egg to caterpillar, from caterpillar to pupa, and then the final metamorphosis to butterfly. These are four padas, or stages, through which each human soul must pass in many births to attain its final goal. Before entering these spiritual stages, the soul is immersed in the lower nature, the anava marga, or self-centered path, bound in fear and lust, hurtful rage, jealousy, confusion, selfishness, consciencelessness and malice. Then it awakens into charya, unselfish religious service, or karma yoga. Once matured in charya, it enters kriya, devotion or bhakti yoga, and finally blossoms into kundalini yoga. Jnana is the state of enlightened wisdom reached toward the path’s end as a result of Self Realization.
“Charya, literally ‘conduct,’ is the first stage of religiousness and the foundation for the next three stages. It is also called the dasa marga, meaning ‘path of servitude,’ for here the soul relates to God as servant to master. The disciplines of charya include humble service, attending the temple, performing one’s duty to community and family, honoring holy men, respecting elders, atoning for misdeeds and fulfilling the ten classical restraints called yamas.
“Kriya is joyous and regular worship, both internal and external, in the home and temple. It includes puja, japa, penance, fasting and scriptural learning.
“[Yoga] begins with asana—sitting quietly in yogic posture—and pranayama, breath control. Pratyahara, sense withdrawal, brings awareness into dharana, concentration, then into dhyana, meditation. Over the years, under ideal conditions, the kundalini fire of consciousness ascends to the higher chakras, burning the dross of ignorance and past karmas. Dhyana finally leads to enstasy—first to savikalpa samadhi, the contemplative experience of Satchidananda, and ultimately to nirvikalpa samadhi, Parasiva. It is when the yogi’s intellect is shattered that he soars into Parasiva and comes out a jnani. Each time he enters that unspeakable nirvikalpa samadhi, he returns to consciousness more and more the knower. He is the liberated one, the jivanmukta, the epitome of kaivalya—perfect freedom—far-seeing, filled with light, filled with love.”
The lexicon further explains: “Jnana is sometimes misunderstood as book knowledge, as a maturity or awakening that comes from simply understanding a complex philosophical system or systems. Those who define jnana in this way deny that the path is a progression of charya-kriya-yoga-jnana or of karma-bhakti-raja-jnana. Rather, they say that one can choose his path, and that each leads to the ultimate goal.”
Tirumular wrote: “Being the Life of life is jnana worship. Beholding the Light of life is yoga worship. Giving life by invocation is external worship. Adoration that displaces anger is charya worship.”

The Kauai Aadheenam Endowment for Hindu Religious Art and Artifacts funded the lotus gates for this granite entryway to the monastery
...................
Some of Hindu Heritage Endowment’s longtime donors have found creative ways to further an aspect of Gurudeva’s mission that appealed to them by starting a fund to support that purpose, hoping others would also be inspired to donate to it as well. HHE has three funds of this nature.
1. Kauai Aadheenam Endowment for Hindu Religious Art and Artifacts makes grants encouraging the traditional Hindu arts through commissioning new paintings, batiks and other artifacts. Artifacts will be displayed on the grounds to provide a Hindu atmosphere. Batiks and paintings will be used in the production of books, posters and magazines. The fund was created by Rajadeva Alahan in memory of his father, William E. Daniels, a lover of art. This fund sponsored the beautiful stainless steel lotus gates (see photo) gracing the monastery entrance.
2. For many years Sri Subramuniya Ashram was the name of the Aadheenam’s guest house for young men training to be monastics and occasionally other male guests who come to study or serve. Hence the name of this endowment: Sri Subramuniya Ashram Scholarship Fund. It provides youth scholarships for monastic and priest training. It helps pay travel and immigration expenses for youth interested in monastic life or priest’s training under the guidance of the Kailasa Pitham. It can cover all basic necessities including, but not limited to, food, clothing, school supplies, necessary travel, dental, medical, etc. This fund was established by Nathan and Bhavani Palani.
3. The Positive Discipline Endowment provides support to projects and programs utilizing Jane Nelsen’s Positive Discipline teachings or material of a similar nature. It was founded by Vinaya Alahan, who joined Gurudeva on pilgrimage in the Caribbean in 2001. Positive Discipline is a kind-but-firm approach to child-rearing that gives Hindu parents a practical alternative to physical punishment and indulgent permissiveness. At the core of the Positive Discipline approach is to connect emotionally with children, to listen, treat them with respect, provide social skills, work with them on solutions to problems, and hone their life skills.
Inspired by these areas? You may give directly to any of the three funds:

These endowments allow the monastery to use your funds as an investment and draw on the grant income over time. This is a way to donate and see your impact last into perpetuity.

Here Is My Contribution to Help Finish Iraivan Temple |
Sponsor Stone Chains & Flooring Stones |
Stone Chains: Among the “wonderments” of Iraivan Temple are the stone chains, each carved from a single solid block of granite. In all, 24 such chains, three feet long, will adorn the spaces. Twelve will hang from the corners of the Nandi Mandapam and 12 within the main temple. Asked why these marvelous artifacts are created, the master builder said with a smile, “To show off the extraordinary skill and artistry of the carvers.” Of course, they also add an ornate and charming visual masterpiece at the corners, and provoke a sense of awe in pilgrims who encounter them for the first time. The process, which takes around 350 man hours per chain, is so difficult that few have been made in the past hundred years, we've been told. Sponsorship is $10,000 per chain.
Rose Granite Flooring Stones: One of the last remaining large projects for Iraivan Temple is the installation of one-inch thick rose granite flooring stones (sample of the reddish stone below) in the second prakaram, the 6,500 square-foot area surrounding the roofed area of the temple. The diagram at left is a detailed map of the project prepared for the tile supplier and the professional installers The colors indicate the various tile sizes. Sponsorship is $1,800 for each 25-square-foot section.
