©2022 Galen Rowell
"At the heart of all photography is an urge to express our deepest personal feelings – to reveal our inner, hidden selves, to unlock the artist. Those of us who become photographers are never satisfied with just looking at someone else’s expression of something that is dear to us. We must produce our own images, instead of buying postcards and photo books. We seek to make our own statements of individuality." ~Galen Rowell, 1940-2022
Galen Rowell was the most influential landscape photographer of his generation. Whereas Ansel Adams worked primarily in large format black and white using wide-angle lenses, Rowell photographed using 35mm color with a preference for telephoto lenses.
His first photo assignment for National Geographic was of himself ascending Half Dome in Yosemite National Park. Because he was an accomplished mountaineer he pioneered a new kind of photography in which he was not merely an
observer but a participant in the landscape scenes that he
photographed.
He was also an inspirational teacher. This 10-minute video is not as much about Galen as it is about his process.

Social Media is a good way to make new best friends who don't really care about your photo of Mt. Everest as much as their cute photo of their new kitten.
Blogging is a better way to attract people to your website and to view your work.
In this article, Zoe Hiljemark gives nine tips on how to promote your photography through blogging.

The town of Borodyanka may have faced some the worst attacks since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine. Although the Ukrainian army regained control of Borodyanka, it is now a "ruined town" strewn with destroyed buildings and burnt armored vehicles. School buildings, homes and apartments in the town center were severely damaged as a result of air and ground strikes.
Truth in Photography is one of the most important forums for documentary photography and social awareness being published today.
It is an open-ended forum for active dialogue and discussion about photography and social change, exploring issues vital to truth in image-making that are crucial to our understanding of the world today. This interactive project questions the singular truth of photography by presenting multiple points of view, featuring diverse curators, photographers, critics, and historians, and integrating vernacular photography, photojournalism, and fine art photography.
Truth in Photography interrogates the nature and intentions of the medium and examines the relationship between the photographers and their subjects. Truth in Photography is produced by Documentary Arts in collaboration with Magnum Photos, Aperture Foundation, and the International Center of Photography.
