NEWS FROM GENEVA, SWITZERLAND - KATIE PIETERSE MEETS WITH NILS MELZER, FORMER UN SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON TORTURE NOW WORKING AT THE INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS
I recently received an email from Katie Pieterse who is visiting the United Nations and the Red Cross in Geneva, Switzerland. While there, she met up with Nils Melzer who many of us may remember as the former UN Special Rapporteur on Torture. He now works at the International Red Cross whose headquarters are there in Geneva where Mr. Melzer resides.
Melzer actually walked up to her and said, "you look familiar." She didn't recognize him at first because he looked a lot shorter than she thought he was. When she finally recognized who he was, they ended up chatting for about 45 minutes.
She says that Melzer can't help us and that no one has been hired to replace him at the UN. She says that Melzer explained that he wanted to move further with his department but that it was "put to a standstill." He said that someone was supposed to be hired at the first of April, however, no one has.
So it sounds like whatever investigation there might have been with his department has since evaporated after he left.
She was hoping that the Red Cross could help however, she says "their hands are tied and that it's completely up to the United Nations."
Stay tuned for more from Katie as she advocates for our cause in Geneva, Switzerland.
She sends us the pictures seen below. The one on the left is the United Nations. The one on the right is the International Red Cross. (click to enlarge pictures)
