Cow Country Cozy
Spring came early in Cow Country, which means that you no longer have to hide from the outside to read. Now you can go on your porch and pull out your book and enjoy the fresh air!
Here are some book recommendations for those lazy, warm mornings of late April.
1. One of my favorite fantasy novels of the last year or so is book 2 in the Blackthorne and Grim series by Juliet Marillier. This is seriously the best fairy tale fantasy I've read in a very long time. It's devastating and beautiful, and maybe needs a special award for making small fey creatures in an Irish setting(ahem... leprechauns...) not seem silly. I will warm you that book 3 in the series is nowhere near as good. So you may want to stick with Tower of Thorns.
2. Some books make you uncomfortable, but also change your perspective in important ways. Dostoyevsky does that every time I read him. Well, I think I might have found the 21st century's Dostoyevsky. His name is Paul Kingsnorth. His novel The Wake is our featured book in my Patreon book club. Come and join us if you want to read with us.
3. Speaking of Robert MacFarlane, one of his older words (also wonderful) is now on sale as an audiobook. I've been listening to it, and the performance is exquisite. Get The Old Ways on sale right now.
4. Finally, I've recently gotten back into poetry of all things. Here's a wonderful book of fairy tales written in sophisticated prose, written by some of the best in the business. Cinderbiter by Dr. Martin Shaw.
Personally, I'm really excited about reading The Wake with my Patreon community. If you've ever wanted to chat with a group of book lovers who love to dig deep into the books they read, come and join us. We have a good time!
And thanks again for coming along with me on my writerly adventures!
