With HIZ, not only are students exposed to the top natural wonders of Africa, but they also engage cross-culturally in a variety of unique settings. The beauty of transformation takes place through interaction with the many amazing people in Zambia. Students learn how to cook the local staple “nshima,” shadow Zambian health care providers, or spend afternoons at the Haven learning developmental care from the Aunties. Relationships are the top experience and continual focal point of the program. We often say, “The heart of HIZ is loving relationships.”

This experience allows students to write a unique chapter in the story of their life. It creates space for individual growth because it challenges and enhances a student’s worldview. Academic lectures on culture, history, literature, and religion are all taught by Zambians. Students share about this experience in great detail on post-undergraduate applications and interviews. It often sets them apart from other applicants.

Dr. Bob Walker, Harding’s Board of Trustees member, makes annual trips to Zambia to perform much-needed surgeries. This has provided once-in-a-lifetime learning opportunities for pre-medicine students (scroll down to see a video of Dr. Walker inviting pre-medicine students to HIZ). This study abroad experience does not stop with pre-health majors. Business majors can learn behind-the-scenes operations at the hospital. Education majors can strengthen their skill sets by learning from the local Zambian children. Social work majors make village visits with the local social worker, Ba Eunice. Bible and Mission’s majors have exposure to effective sub-Saharan missionaries and Harding graduates, Matt and Andrea Miller. HIZ is open to all majors and as Jessica likes to say, “There is something for everyone.”

HUA set off from the U.S. on September 1st, beginning their adventure in Australia, where they spent two weeks exploring the sights. Highlights included visiting the iconic Sydney Opera House, enjoying an overnight cruise on the Great Barrier Reef, and even diving to see the reef up close. Afterward, the group flew to New Zealand, where they toured the famous Hobbiton set from the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films. They wrapped up September by sailing to the picturesque island nation of Fiji.

The HUF group arrived in Italy on September 18th and spent the following week and a half settling into life at the Harding villa. During this time, they explored local sights and museums while, of course, indulging in some delicious gelato along the way!
