2023 Auction - Coming Soon!!
Mark your calendars, the Spring Auction is almost here!
This year, we’re offering a curated list of items with a focus on gourmet meals, gift cards and certificates, and events. The auction will be entirely virtual this year starting on Wednesday, April 19 until Saturday, April 22 at 11:59 pm. If you have any items or event suggestions you would like to donate, please let Nathan Boone or Marlies Grogg know by Thursday, April 13.
We’ll be using Auctria.com again to host our auction this year. A special email will be sent out before the auction starts, allowing you to register and view items. If you have trouble registering or navigating the website, please contact either Nathan Boone or Marlies Grogg. They will be in the office all day Wednesday, April 19 when the auction goes live!
And after the auction is complete we will then gather to celebrate with a night of Bingo, Barbeque, and Beer (aptly named the BBB) on Friday, May 12, 2023. More details to come in the following weeks.
Here’s to making this another successful auction! Let’s finish the church year strong and we look forward to seeing you at the BBB Party!

Spring Cleaning!
On Saturday, April 1, as part of the Annual OU Big Event, volunteers from the OU men's glee club joined First U volunteers (Larry Little, John Schneider, and Ron Wasson) to clean up the church buildings and grounds. They cleaned up the courtyard and breezeway, washed windows, dusted windowsills and baseboards in the sanctuary and Daniel Hall, weeded the memorial garden, climbed the ladder, and changed a few smoke detector batteries. Such a BIG help they were!

League of Women Voters of OKC
On March 30 the League of Women Voters of OKC and of OK hosted a huge event
at the OK History Center. Cathy Webster portrayed RGB and Chris Gonzales
portrayed Antonin Scalia at this major, wonderful event. The theme was
the friendship of these two Supreme Court Justices who were as different as
night and day in their legal and political points of view, and yet were close
friends. Chris and Cathy sang several songs with very clever lyrics.
The entire event was conceived and planned by Suzanne Broadbent and Jean
McLaughlin, among other people.

Friday, April 7, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Egg Dyeing Party!
Join Us Friday Night in the Courtyard at the church (or Daniel Hall if unexpected weather) for our annual Easter Egg Dying Party! We have the dye. You bring hard boiled eggs to decorate!
Last year we ordered pizza and asked for a dollar a slice. Let Tim know if you’re coming (and if so, how many) and if you want us to do pizza again. It’ll help for us to have some numbers of how much pizza to order! Please bring your own drinks or reusable water bottles. Email pizza info to Tim at tatkins@1uc.org
This year we’re adding a new component to our Egg Dyeing Party – an Egg Drop! Please bring recycled materials (and feel free to drop some off at the church courtyard Friday) and our children and youth and maybe an adult or two will use those recycled materials to create something that will protect a raw egg from being dropped from high up. You might have done a similar activity before in a Physics class – I know I did! If you’ve got spare bubble wrap or air pockets, now is the time to bring them to the church!

Sunday, April 9, immediately after the service (12:00 pm)
Easter Egg Hunt
After the worship service on Sunday, at approximately noon, we will head outside to the courtyard and front grounds for our annual Easter Egg hunt!
Our middle and high school youth group is invited to join outside at 11:00 am, to help set up for the Easter Egg hunt and start hiding the eggs. Our egg hunt will work like it worked last year – children and youth will hunt for 5 or 10 eggs depending on their age, and turn in those eggs for a special Easter Goodie Bag, put together by our youth group last week.
The Easter Bunny will be hopping around during the hunt if you want to get a picture!

Sunday, April 16, 1:30 pm - RSVP by Friday, April 14
Death Cafe
At a Death Cafe, people drink tea, eat cake, and discuss death. Our aim is to increase awareness of death to help people make the most of their (finite) lives. A Death Cafe is a group-directed discussion, not a grief support or counseling session. It is offered in an accessible, respectful, and confidential space, with no intention of leading people to any conclusion or course of action. And there's cake! All are welcome! Please feel free to invite friends and family.
To ensure enough tea and (vegan) cake, please RSVP by Friday, April 14.

Social Justice News!
APRIL 8, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm in the Eddy Room: Members from the Sustainable Living Organization will present information on the upcoming 2030 Green Sanctuary Project. If you would like to attend the April 8th planning session, bring a lunch and beverage.
FROM THE OK POLICY INSTITUTE:“If you’re not participating from 18 to 30, then someone who is older and at a different point of life than you, and probably makes more money than you, is deciding what laws and policies you live by. That’s a really dangerous, commonsensical thing that I think a lot of the youth don’t understand.”
- Emily Stacey, Rose State College political science professor, speaking on how if the trend of low voter turnout continues, the younger generation risks having less of a voice on policies that impact their day-to-day life. [Oklahoma Watch]
If you are interested in becoming involved in social justice programs and activities, please contact Susan Bishop at (405) 623-4017 or sdbishop50@gmail.com

Monday, April 10 - 9:00 am
Capitol Day!
We are gathering to discuss current legislation and matters that affect public education in Oklahoma. We will break out for meetings with legislators and then host lunch for those Senators and Representatives who accept our invitation. OKPLAC will be providing lunch so be sure to RSVP.
It is also very important for your legislators to receive a personal invitation to lunch from YOU. Please reach out to them and invite them to lunch (while providing the link to RSVP). If they don't respond for lunch, be sure to schedule an appointment to visit them in their office during the morning or afternoon breakouts.
It is imperative that we show up to let our voices be heard in the halls at the Capitol. Legislators need to hear from those who choose and believe in public education. Our voices must echo louder than the opposition! Please make every effort to be there on April 10th to show your support for our kids and our neighbors. Every single Oklahoman benefits from public education. We must protect and preserve it.
• 9:00 am - Gather & greet local PLAC chapters and advocates from across Oklahoma • 9:30 am - Legislative briefing from OKPLAC Legislative Chair Sherri Brown • 10:00 am - Visit Legislators and advocate • 12:00 pm - Lunch with Legislators - CLICK HERE TO RSVP FOR LUNCH!
• 1:30 pm - Visit Legislators and advocate

Green Sanctuary/Green Minute |

Here’s another recipe using meat or meat substitute. I am sorry that I cannot remember where I saw it.
Cabbage Roll Soup
Prep Time: 20 min; Cook time: 20-30 min. Serves: 8-10
Difficulty: No
Ingredients:
2 T olive oil
1 T kosher salt
1 diced medium onion or 2 bunches of green onions
1 lb. lean ground beef or substitute
1 lb. packaged coleslaw mix of cabbage & carrots
1 ½ cups of tomato sauce
10 cups broth
1 cup brown rice
3-5 bay leaves
Fresh parsley to taste
1 t cumin
1 t coriander
Sriracha or cayenne pepper to taste (optional)
Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add ground meat or substitute and season with salt and pepper. Cook, breaking up the meat or “meat”, until it is browned. Add onion and cook until translucent. Add garlic and cook briefly. Stir in the broth, tomato sauce, bay leaf, cumin, coriander, brown sugar, sriracha or cayenne (if wanted), brown rice and coleslaw mixture. Turn heat to low and simmer until the cabbage is wilted and the rice is done, about 30-40 minutes. Add parsley just before serving.
Besides being economical, this heats up very well. Enjoy!
If you have a green hint, idea or suggestion, please let me know. Lonney Corder-Agnew, lacorderagnew@cox.net.
