Could this lingering Covid symptom be what causes your child's picky eating?
Losing your smell and taste is a symptom that is particular to Covid and can be very distressing to people who experience it. Unless you've suffered yourself, it's hard to imagine why not being able to smell or taste your food would be a 'big deal' and this got me thinking about all the children with autism who are picky eaters.
We often don't understand why some kids "just don't eat" but once you experience a loss of smell and taste yourself you start to realise how food can become a chore and even old favourites can all of a sudden be very unpleasant.
If you are experiencing loss of smell or taste please read my comprehensive article about this where I cover the latest research on the potential reasons and solutions to this horrible symptom.
This article may also shine a light on why your child may be a picky eater. I covered picky eating as a topic in my article for Summer 2021 edition of the Autism Eye magazine, but I believe that lack of smell and taste (often a symptom associated with low zinc) can hugely impact a child's relationship with food. I will continue to do research on this because healing our children's relationship with food will help heal everything else!
I hope you haven't suffered this yourself, but if you have don't worry - it will come back eventually. I've listed some top tips below on causes and solutions with a food of the week to help and a good supplement.
Stay well and enjoy all the delicious benefits healthy food has to offer!
