A holistic state-of-the-art AI-powered framework for decision-support and smart energy services in buildings

Emerging from the Horizon2020 MATRYCS project, the Big Data Alliance (BDA) is a structured collaborative space for selected and active stakeholders that will work together to solve the practical challenges relating to building lifecycle management by combining meaningful data sets and using data analytics.

The BDA aims to become “the” European platform for identifying, connecting, analysing, visualizing and operationalizing open and available data sets in Europe.

The BDA is based on:

Engagement and interaction of key stakeholders’ groups to provide and benefit to and from each other

Co-creation of solutions by identifying challenges and providing demand-driven solutions and data analytics

Active participation in activities with an organised and targeted workflow Initially designed to focus on buildings.

The Alliance is also open to growth and the inclusion of other thematic clusters - such as energy, water or transport - that follow the same processes, ultimately covering multiple sustainable urban development domains.

Stakeholders whose engagement is considered significant are:

• policy makers and representatives of standardisation organisations (SDOs)

• energy sector companies, organizations from the building and construction sectors

• financial institutions

• IT industry players and SMEs

• industry associations and technology clusters

• research centers and universities

• the general public

The BDA will be a regular and interactive process with a high degree of facilitation and preparation and furthermore it will be a cyclical stakeholder process to connect and utilize open data sets.

On the 27th of September 2021, the Big Data Alliance (BDA) Introduction Webinar was held successfully. After a short introduction to the MATRYCS project by the Project Coordinator, Pasquale Andriani (ENG), BDA concept, its vision and its objectives were presented to the participants. The webinar concluded with a Q&A part moderated by Marcelo Lampkowski (ICLEI) where participants had the chance to discuss with MATRYCS partners about the BDA work process and the way to join and be an active member.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability – is a global network working with more than 2,500 local and regional governments committed to sustainable urban development. ICLEI influences sustainability policy and drives local action for low emission, nature-based, equitable, resilient, and circular development.

EURAC Research, with 11 institutes and 5 centers and more than 800 partners, brings its significant expertise for fruitful collaboration activities. EURAC's Institute for Renewable Energy conducts applied research on advanced energy systems, based on or including sustainable energy sources.

H2020 BEYOND project offers a reference big data platform implementation and AI analytics toolkit toward innovative data sharing-driven energy service ecosystems for the building sector and beyond. As a MATRYCS sister project will bring significant value to BDA.

BISITE (Bioinformatics, Intelligent Systems and Educational Technology) research group of the University of Salamanca (Spain) is formed by professionals whose principal interest is the development and application of intelligent computer systems to different types of problems: AI, ML, Deep Learning, Emotional Systems, Fintech, Blockchain, IoT, Industry 4.0, Smart Cities, Smart Grids, Intelligent Textiles, Cybersecurity.

AIR Institute is a private non-profit research organization, aimed at the promotion and development of scientific research in the field of computer science and artificial intelligence. Located in Valladolid (Spain), the AIR Institute is active in a wide range of areas, especially in predictive maintenance systems, Industry 4.0 and Internet of Things, Bioinformatics, Smart Cities, Social Computing and Blockchain.

IoT Digital Innovation Hub is formed by innovation-driven organizations aiming to help companies (specially SMEs) become more competitive through the adoption of Internet of Things technologies in their business/production processes, products, and services.

The National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) is the oldest, most prestigious, and most competitive academic institute in Greece. NTUA is joining the BDA through its EPU-NTUA (Decision Support System Laboratory), a multidisciplinary scientific unit within the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Plutinsus is a research-driven technology start-up that develops innovative data science applications to turn complexities into opportunities. Among other activities, Plutinsus develops software for the data-driven operation, maintenance and optimization of buildings and energy systems.
