Sister
Julia Etta Lewis was a member of Historic Pleasant Green Missionary
Baptist Church. Those of us that knew her remember that she had a
commanding presence. She had a manner of being that was
authoritative, dominant, forceful, imposing, and striking. She drew
attention and commanded respect. In short, she was a force to be
reckoned with.
The
Lord imbued Sister Julia with a convicted spirit. She was often
called upon to speak at Historic Pleasant Green. On each occasion
she exemplified what is recorded in our Church Covenant, she was
“exemplary in her deportment!” Sister Julia Etta Lewis sought
God’s help every step of her life’s purposeful journey. She was
“just in her dealings and faithful in her engagements.”
Henceforth Her “works do follow Her” on both sides of the River

In
the mid sixties, the late Ms. Lewis was a leader in the Civil Rights
Movement in Lexington, and was a key leader in the Kentucky Congress
of Racial Equality. She was a registered nurse by profession
who focused on problems of segregation in theaters, education,
shopping, trying on clothing and hats before purchase and public
transportation. Nonviolent demonstrations and sit-ins were her
weapons. Her voice and ability to extemporaneously quote Martin
Luther King, William Shakespeare, Paul Lawrence Dunbar and the Bible
would inspire and motivate marchers to continue in the fight for
freedom. She was a leader of the march and deliberations that
integrated the city's food chain restaurants. She lectured in
the state on the importance of freedom and responsibility. She
participated with the historic Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist
Church activities. She served as a council in regard to civil rights
issues to mayors, governors and presidents

March is Women's History Month… So throughout this month we honor the historic contributions of women in the Bible and the incredible impact they have left on the world.
Meet Miriam…the older sister of Moses.
In the history of Christianity, Miriam is the first woman to be a prophetess. Exodus 15:20 says…Then Miriam the prophet, Aaron’s sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her, with timbrels and dancing.
Though she is not talked about a lot in scripture, Miriam played an important part in the life of Moses and the nation of Israel. It was Miriam’s bravery and faith that changed the course of history.
When Moses was born the current pharaoh ordered the death of all newborn Hebrew boys in order to reduce the Israelite population. In Hebrews 11:23 we learn that Moses’ parents hid him for three months. It got to the point where they could no longer hide Moses, and his mother Jochebed placed Moses in a basket and set him afloat through the bank of the Nile river.
When we first see Miriam, she is watching to see what would happen to her brother. The rest of the story shows the type of intelligence she had and how much of a quick thinker she was. Her quick decision had a drastic impact on the first few years of Moses’ life.
Exodus 2:5-9 reads in part…“Then Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the riverbank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her female slave to get it. She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. ‘This is one of the Hebrew babies,’ she said. Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, ‘Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?’ ‘Yes, go,’ she answered. So the girl went and got the baby’s mother. Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, ‘Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.’ So the woman took the baby and nursed him”.
Miriam fetched Jochebed, Moses' own mother, to nurse him until the pharaoh's daughter could take care of him.
Miriam was smart enough to see the situation happening and make a quick and decisive decision. In doing this she reconnected Moses with his mother. This was critical to Moses’ life because there is no doubt this helped to shape his formative years.
To God Be The Glory…Women have always played an important role in the Bible.God used Miriam from a young age to impact and save Moses’ life, and ultimately she became a leader among the Israelites. Moses leaves a big imprint on the Old Testament and also wrote the ten commandments that were by God for the Israelites. If it wasn’t for Miriam’s bravery, our history would look a lot different.

This Sunday's Lesson: "Justice Triumphs Over Injustice" Habakkuk 2:6-14
Lesson Nugget: The prophet Habakkuk complains to God for allowing the people of Jerusalem to be treated unjustly. God's response is that injustice will not last always and that those meading out injustice will be called into account and that the very unjust devices used toward others will bring them down.
God's message delivered by Habakkuk still rings true today." ... whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap." Galatians 6:7. Do we still believe that God sees injustice and that He will in His time call those responsible into account?

Greetings to our Church family and friends!
We greet you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! On behalf of the Youth Ministry, we ask that you help and bless our Youth with a “unique” opportunity. With the help of the Lord, we will be traveling to Black Wall Street in Tulsa, OK, and the Little Rock Nine historic site in Little Rock, AR, during this spring break in early April 2025. It is OUR duty to teach OUR Youth OUR history because there are those out there who want to erase it! So, that’s where you can help us by participating in our in-house fundraising project “Count Your Blessings.” It’s very simple. All you have to do is take inventory of your house, count your many blessings, by following a list of household items worth a certain amount, tally it up, add it up and that is the amount you can donate OR if you would like to donate a flat amount, then we appreciate that too. Whatever God places on your heart to do, we are thankful for it. Please place your donation in an envelope and turn it in to one of the Youth Directors. We will accept cash, check and donations via our Church’s CashApp and Givelify App. We just ask that you notate your donation to a particular Youth member or to the Youth Ministry. Please ask any Youth for a form or you can pick them up at church.
Also, if you have a Youth who would like to join us in our service and mission, please let us know as our discipleship is ongoing and they are welcome any time!
We thank you in advance for sharing in this wonderful opportunity for our Youth and we ask for your continued love and support because remember, IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD! Thank you and God bless!
Yours in Christ,
Bro. Charles Happy & Sis. Heather Happy, Youth Directors
Rev. Wendell Emerson, Spiritual Leader
Bro. Desmond Duncan, Assistant Youth Director
Sis. Kellye Emerson, Assistant Youth Director

‘Keep Climbing!’ New Student
Award Named for PT graduate
By Ryan Clark CHS Communication Director
A new College of Health Sciences student award has been created and named for a 1985 graduate of the Physical Therapy department.
This year, administrators will give out the first-ever Tassa Jones Wigginton Perseverance Award, which will be given annually to “a student who has overcome challenges while completing the degree, showing perseverance and dedication to the PT profession,” the official award proposal reads. “This can include raising children, loss of a family member, financial challenges, physical challenges, etc.”
The award is named for Wigginton, who graduated from the College of Health Sciences with a BHS degree in Physical Therapy in 1985. Wigginton was 40 years old and raising children when she was attending PT school, and sometimes her children had to accompany her to campus.
In fact, many of her classmates said she took on a mother figure role to the class while she was also making lifelong friends.
“I am very humbled (with the naming of the award),” Wigginton said. “But I didn't graduate by myself. I thank God. I also thank my late husband, John T. Wigginton and our now adult children, Jacques and Nieta. They were the wind beneath my wings. They ‘graduated’ with me. My family was one team. Our class was another. We persevered together.”

FLU
Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death.
Flu shots are available at local pharmacies. Consult your physician regarding a flu vaccination.
RSV
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common, contagious virus that usually causes mild symptoms. In older adults and adults with certain underlying conditions, RSV can cause severe infections.
RSV shots are available at local pharmacies. Consult your physician regarding a RSV vaccination.
COVID-19
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some will become seriously ill and require medical attention. Older people and those with underlying medical conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. Anyone can get sick with COVID-19 and become seriously ill or die at any age.
The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about the disease and how the virus spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by staying at least 1 metre apart from others, wearing a properly fitted mask, and washing your hands or using an alcohol-based rub frequently. Get vaccinated when it’s your turn and follow local guidance.
The virus can spread from an infected person’s mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing or breathe. These particles range from larger respiratory droplets to smaller aerosols. It is important to practice respiratory etiquette, for example by coughing into a flexed elbow, and to stay home and self-isolate until you recover if you feel unwell.
Both COVID vaccines and Booster COVID vaccines are available at local pharmacies. Consult your physician regarding COVID vaccinations.
