Classical Greek for Beginners

Weekly online classes for beginners in Classical Greek will commence on Saturday 12th September at 1.00-2.00pm (UK time) until Saturday 12th December (with the exception of 31st October). Classes will be conducted on Zoom and students should have access to the textbook, "Greek to GCSE book 1" by John Taylor, published by Bloomsbury. The fee for these classes is £90 - contact me for payment options. Please email me by clicking the button below to register or if you have questions.

Online group class

Intermediate Classical Greek

This is a class which has been meeting for several years, and we are always happy to welcome new members. This is a leisure class (no exam preparation) which combines grammar explanations, exercises and translations. We have used the Athenaze course and have recently switched to Greek to GCSE book 2. 

This group has been meeting in person in Belfast but moved online in March due to the Covid crisis. We will continue to meet online for one hour per week on Mondays at 6pm UK time during the autumn term, commencing on 14th September until 7th December. There will be no class on 26th October.

Individual Lessons

Classical Greek at all levels

I am available for individual lessons and am happy to arrange a virtual meeting to discuss your requirements. All lessons are conducted on Zoom. 

I use the Greek to GCSE textbooks by John Taylor, but happy to use another book if you have a preference. I make my own notes on all grammar concepts and these are shared on screen during lessons. Explanations are illustrated with a smartpen using screensharing, and all notes are emailed to students afterwards.

Individual Online Classes

Learn Latin

Belfast Summer School tutor, Stephen McCarthy, is available for individual Latin lessons on Zoom. 

Stephen is in the final stages of his PhD on Ancient Physics, Epicurus, and Lucretius, and he has been central to the success of the Summer School since it began. 

At the first summer school in 2016, he was a guest lecturer, delivering a paper on the poet Sappho.  The following year, 2017, Latin classes were added to the summer school programme and Stephen has taught every year since at both beginners and intermediate level.

Belfast Summer School in Latin and Classical Greek

As 2020 began, plans were in train for the Belfast Summer School in Latin and Classical Greek in July but by the beginning of March 2020, it was clear that the Covid crisis was going to disrupt our plans. As the UK went into lockdown and we learned that large gatherings were being forbidden, regretfully I cancelled the summer school. But in early May, a virtual summer school on a much smaller scale (or so I thought) was advertised on social media and various email lists and before long it was clear that we weren’t thinking big enough!
