Did you know that fall is one of the best times to visit the Central Coast? With some of the warmest days of the year – often in the balmy mid-70s during the day to enjoy exploring and cool evenings for great sleeping weather – the autumn months in Pismo Beach and neighboring towns are a hidden gem.
Not only that, but with smaller numbers of visitors than the summer months, we have a quiet, relaxed feel in Pismo Beach and at our great local restaurants and wineries, too.
Fall also means the potential for winter storms in the coming months. As a coin collector, the change in weather can be a boon for finding treasures on the beaches that Mother Nature has helped bring closer to the surface.
In this issue, I share several of the fun discoveries I’ve made over many years using a metal detector.

With the fall season on the way, the potential for future stormy winter weather may help unearth hidden treasures along beaches and shore cliffs.
How does it happen?
Heavy objects, like iron spikes, lead sinkers, etc., fall to the bottom of the ocean or get lodged in sea cliff rocks. The salt water causes the iron to leach onto things next to it, bonding to the item.
Remember last winter’s storms? These big storms create larger tides and higher surf, which can stir up the ocean floor and bring things to the shore. Storms also can cause beach erosion. The increased wave action can uncover old coins so they are now within the reach of a good metal detector. It can also uncover jewelry (both gold and silver) and other items that have been buried on the ocean floor or lodged in cliff rock along the shores.
It’s a thrill to hear the metal detector when it makes a hit. Depending on the model of metal detector, valuable metals like gold or silver may cause a high pitched beep, while lower value metals like iron will make a dull beep.
Below, I share just a few of the treasures I’ve uncovered along the Central Coast over the years.
I hope you enjoy them!
This silver half dollar was infused with iron from nails and other ferrous materials. I found it on the beach north of the Cliffs Resort in Shell Beach after a winter storm washed the sand out from the cliff rocks.
Silver rings are relatively common, and I found these along several SLO area beaches during the winters. Their condition may be bad after years of salt water, but these are all sterling silver. Many are half their original thickness from the constant wave action.
This jar is filled with silver coins I've found over the years.
This silver spoon was bonded to a ship's spike.
I found it under the Cayucos pier on the beach after a powerful winter storm.
Unlike silver, gold retains its color and integrity even after years on the ocean floor or buried in the sand.
I found this gold nugget pendant and gold chain with diamond pendant near Avila Beach, along with many coins, after winter storms.
Many of the items found over the years are like these degraded clad coins and copper cents.
They're too rough to clean or spend (they have no value and can no longer be used as currency).
What should I do with these? I'd love to hear your ideas!
Metal detecting is a fun hobby. Warning: it can be addictive!
I estimate that I have found well over 100,000 coins since I first picked up a metal detector 40 years ago.
All it takes is a good metal detector with head phones and a sand scoop.
With practice, patience, and a little digging, you never know what you’ll find.
And that's the best part of the hunt!
Let me know what you uncover!
