Russian propaganda continues to spread disinformation about the work of international structures and organizations. In this regard, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, to discredit international justice, spread disinformation that the International Criminal Court allegedly “neglects” the investigation of crimes against humanity and war crimes committed on the territory of temporarily occupied parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. In particular, he stated that “more than 3,000 reports about crimes against the inhabitants of Donbas were sent to this International Criminal Court, and there was no reaction ... We have no confidence in this body”. Lavrov’s information that the International Criminal Court (ICC) “neglects” the investigation of the situation in Ukraine is an outright lie.
After the crimes committed by the Russian occupiers in Bucha, Irpin, and Borodyanka, the ICC deployed a team of 42 investigators, forensic experts, and support staff to the country in May. In addition, the ICC Prosecutor’s Office joined the Joint Investigation Team to Investigate Russia’s War Crimes in Ukraine (JIT) in the spring of 2022. JIT was created by Ukraine, Lithuania, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Slovakia. The group also includes the EU Criminal Justice Agency, where 27 EU member states and ten other states are represented.
