NEWSLETTER

Hello everyone,

This newsletter has me sharing some holiday snaps... there were no trips to Greece this year, but the photo above was taken in 2017 at the temple of Aphaia on the island of Aegina, just a short ferry trip from Piraeus, the port of Athens. I had no idea that this temple existed, despite holidaying on the island when I was younger. You can read about the temple and the goddess Aphaia below.

Best wishes, Helen

Congratulations Alex!

Many congratulations to Summer School student Alex Miller from Massachusetts who won a gold medal in the National Latin Exam Level III. The NLE is a test given annually to Latin students across the United States and around the world and students may earn certificates, medals, and qualify for scholarships. The exam is a 40-question, multiple-choice test and students are given 45 minutes to complete their answers.

Despite living in the USA, Alex has been a regular at the Belfast summer school. He attended virtually this year, and made the trip with his mum Professor Debbie Felton in 2018 and 2019, attending classes in Beginners and Intermediate Greek.

Well done Alex!

Aegina's Hidden Temple

The Temple of Aphaia is Aegina's hidden treasure. Aphaia's name means 'invisible' or 'unseen', and the temple was invisible to me when I first visited as a teenager who wanted nothing more than lie on the beach.

The temple is on top of a hill in the north-east of the island, with commanding views all around. It is beautiful, as all ancient ruins are, and it had a magical atmosphere, with much fewer visitors than the crowded sites at Athens and Epidaurus.
