Banbury Star Cyclists' Club

June 2018 newsletter

Well, May has been quite a month for the club. We've had a multiple national champion and Commonwealth Games rider compete in one of Wednesday evening time trials, we've had another successful Rising Stars session, with a 10 year-old junior member then going on to do her first TT, we've had our first club trophy of the year, the Friswell Cup, awarded and we've ended the month with a very successful annual road race. Read on for more details and other club news and information.

Please send any comments, ideas or proposals regarding the contents of the newsletter to the Press Officer.

Presidential ponderings

The highlight of the month of May will always be the club's annual road race and Banbury Star CC is highly regarded by the local racing fraternity for putting on a consistently high-quality event. So did we deliver in 2018? Judging by the positive feedback from British Cycling and the smiles (ok, grimaces) from the riders we most certainly did.

My thanks go out to all the club and family members who helped with this year's event, the planning for which started over six months ago. Our club's reputation as one that can deliver safe racing is heightened even further with the time you gave the club either on the day or as part of the build-up. The proof: Patrick Kavanagh (Chair of BC Central Region) said afterwards "The women's race has become one of the most popular in the country with its challenging course and high standard of organisation".

Our own race squad were also taking part, some of them in their very first road race and special mention must go to Luke Sherlock who finished 14th which is an incredible performance given the strength of the field. It's great to see the club being represented so enthusiastically once more.

May wasn't just about the road race however and you'll see more details below of what we've been doing and what we've got planned for these lovely summer days.

2018 Time Trial season

The highlight of our Wednesday night time trial season so far has to be the appearance of multiple national champion and  2018 Commonwealth Games rider Dan Bigham (right) last month. In not ideal conditions, he won by a margin of over 2 minutes and broke the 6 year old 20k course record by 32 seconds. He told us he loves the course and will be back to ride it again later in the season.

Meanwhile, Simon Kisley remains the club's top TT rider, recently adding the Friswell Cup to his silverware, as well as wins at two local club TTs.

THANK YOU for your support

You can read the review of our road race below and on the website, but first we'd like to say a big thank to all our sponsors for their help and support:

Race Mechanic - Bikes 'n' Banter

Men's KOM - Banbury Bike Box Hire

Women's QOM - Castle at Edge Hill

Men's Race - White Horse Banbury

Women's Race - Broadribbs

Bill Ord also provided the award for the first Banbury Star U23 member to finish.

Also thank you to all the members, plus their friends and families who volunteered, before, during and after the event to do the following duties which made the event possible and such a great success:- the organising committee, the marshal recruiter and leaflet dropper, course marshals, parking attendants, course drivers, KOM/QOM and finish line recorders, sign on officials, sign collector, sign erection team, grass cutter and pothole painter, trophy and number organiser, kitchen helpers, cake makers and providers and of course the man with the biggest responsibility race secretary Mike Hicks.

A great team effort - thank you all.

Banbury Star Road Race

After torrential overnight rain and a forecast for further thunderstorms, the day thankfully stayed dry and warm for what turned out to be an excellent day of racing. Many of you will have already seen on Facebook and Twitter the large number of thank yous and compliments from riders, clubs, teams and British Cycling on our well run and popular event.

The men's race was won by Danny Axford (Artic Tacx RT), who also won this very event way back in 1993. Some achievement. Richard Gildea (Didcot Phoenix CC) who finished second won the KOM prize.

In the women's race Mary Wilkinson (Ellmore Digital RT), not only won the race, but also the QOM prize.

The first club member and local rider home was Peter Dumbreck who finished 7th, but rode for Shutt RT.

The first rider in a Banbury Star jersey was young Luke Sherlock, who put in a great ride to finish in 14th place, in what was his very first road race. As a result he claimed Bill Ord's generous prize to encourage more young riders.

For an insight as to what it's like to compete in the road race, do read our latest blog "Riding the club's 2018 road race" by Mark Boyles.

A request from the Press Officer

With members of the race squad now competing in more events it is starting to get more difficult for me to keep a track on who's doing what and where during both the week and weekend. Up until now, I've been trying to follow all this on Facebook, but some posts I know I've missed.

Could I please therefore request that if you'd like me to try and get something reported in the Guardian a report is sent direct to me at the email link below. A copy/paste of the FB post is fine.

What I really need though to build some sort of story is the following: venue, event distance/format, organising club, brief course details, finishing position and time, Photos are always a bonus, plus a link to the organising club's website/results page.

The Guardian's deadline is 11am on a Monday for the following Thursday's edition.

Thanks,    Roger

Cafe of the month

              The Revolution Cafe

                                             at Cotswold Cycles

A great bike themed cafe within a bike shop, what could be better for a mid-ride coffee and cake stop? It's situated at 3 Cotswold Link, Moreton in Marsh, GL56 0JU, where you'll always get a friendly welcome from Sara Griffiths and her team. On a recent visit the cafe was decked out in Italian flags and you could drink your coffee watching the Giro on the TV. The link to their new website is below, which should be up and running soon.

Race Squad news

The race squad has certainly been one of the club's success stories this year, with an ever increasing number of members taking part in TTs and road races. As mentioned elsewhere we're taking 3 teams to the Silverstone 9up TT and we had nine club entries in our annual road race, compared to just one last year.

In all now, we've had 37 riders entering various TTs and 20 have entered either crit or road races. Training takes place on a Monday night with the Chain Gang and is open to all club members.

Local events coming up for those who want to try racing are; Milton Keynes Bowl crit races, every Thursday and Abingdon 12 week summer crit series starting on Wednesday 6th June.

Rising Stars - youth section news

Rising Star and junior BSCC member, 10 year old Isabella Boyles, raced her first ever TT recently at a 10 mile closed circuit at Weston on the Green. She managed a credible time of 45.45 and is already asking when the next race is.

After only two sessions of our new Rising Stars/Go-Ride scheme this is a brilliant start and hopefully an inspiration to others to become involved in cycle sport.

Our next session is planned for Saturday 9th June, from 9.30am at Banbury Rugby Club, where, for those interested, we can explain how Isabella entered.

Keep up to date on all the youth section news by following us on the Rising Stars Facebook page. If you have any queries, or would like to register your child for a session then please contact Lee Heron via the link below.
