Rainbow Parents Carers Bulletin - Edition 207

Bulletin 207

Dear Parent Carers and Members,

Welcome to our 7th Covid-19 weekly bulletin.

Following on from our message last week about it being vital to have your voice heard - we have produced a survey to ask for your comments in response to the Education Committee's Call for Evidence https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/B7N7VTL. Please do not worry if you cannot answer all questions. If you would like one of the team to explain what they mean, please get in touch.

Vicky Ford MP from Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Children and Families has written a letter to inform families about temporary changes to the law for children and young people with SEND.

To find out about entitlements for children with SEND during the COVID-19 outbreak, there is a free webinar delivered by Barristers at 39 Essex Chambers 6th May at 11:00 https://www.39essex.com/webinar-entitlements-for-children-and-young-people-with-send-during-covid-19/

There is concern that recent legislation changes in relation to SEND Provision: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/modification-notice-ehc-plans-legislation-changes will have a detrimental impact on the most vulnerable children and young people. Also, the prospect of the LA’s triggering easements to the Care Act provision will further this impact.

The Government has made the decision to legislate on SEND in order to strike the right balance during the outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) between:

  • the needs of children and young people with SEND to be protected and receive the right support in a timely way; and
  • managing the demands on local authorities (LAs) and health bodies to respond to the outbreak

LA's have been advised to:

  • Avoid blanket policies
  • Keep records about decisions (for transparency)
  • Keep in touch with parents and young people
  • Keep in touch with schools and colleges

However, we need you to tell us your experiences and how it has been for you so we can pass your story on.

You can do this in a variety of ways:

  • Completing the survey above
  • By joining us at either the Parent Carer Forum meetings or the Parent to Parent Zoom meetings held weekly (detailed below).
  • A call to discuss your situation. Please email to arrange a confidential telephone call.

Our Local Authority is working hard to try to support local families and to set up support where possible. It is even more vital that you let our Local Authority know what is working well and also what is working less well so they can understand how best to support our community.

Again, we cannot emphasise enough, that during this time it is important to have a voice. We value your comments, so do get in touch.

What's Going On

P2P Support Meeting, Wednesday 6th of May, 20:00

Please email to register for the link to join via Zoom.  We plan to alternate weekly between 11:00 and 20:00. Therefore, next Wednesday’s meeting will be at 11:00. We are looking forward to seeing you all and welcome any new parent carers.

Zoom Social Group, Tuesday's at 13:00

This week we had a guest appearance from Natelle who helped us to get creative with colours! We have also had some amazing creations by participants, that have included: a Quarantine Castle made from loo rolls; delicious looking muffins and an amazing chocolate cake. Each week we set a Mission and the winner receives an Amazon Voucher, so do encourage your 14 to 25 year olds to join in. We have the pleasure of Ella and Lauren from Transform Training for the next few weeks. They will be exploring feelings around lockdown, identifying ways to keep happy, healthy and safe and looking at random acts of kindness. These Zoom Socials will be very helpful for everyone so please support your young people to attend. Just send us an email to register and we will send you the link.

Additional Support

We are recruiting volunteers via NCVS to support our community with:

  • Telephone/Face Time Befriending
  • Dog walking
  • Daily exercise support with our young people
  • Collecting and dropping off shopping

Please register for any of the above support by contacting the team via email.

If anyone would like 1:1 support and to speak to the team, do email us and we will respond as soon as we can.

Remember, we welcome your ideas and any suggestions of how we can extend our support during this period.

We hope you are keeping as well as possible and finding ways to adjust to this current situation.

Best wishes from the Rainbow Team
