Lessons Learned in Winning SBIR/STTR Grants

The Office of the Sr. Vice President for Research and Innovation, along with the MSU Center for Interdisciplinarity, Spartan Innovations, and Red Cedar Ventures, is pleased to offer an upcoming workshop titled “Lessons Learned in Writing SBIR/STTR Grants” on February 14 at 2:00 p.m. in the Red Cedar Room in the Kellogg Center. Peter Savolainen named ITE Fellow

MSU Foundation Professor Peter Savolainen has been named a Fellow of the Institute of Transportation Engineers for his ongoing contributions and leadership in improving mobility and transportation safety around the world. He is a professor and associate chair for graduate studies in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

        Sergey Baryshev to advance use-inspired accelerator technology

        Sergey Baryshev has received a prestigious Accelerator Stewardship Award from the Office of High Energy Physics at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering will use $225,000 to design and establish a high power X-band nanosecond pulse microscopy system.

        MSUT Agreement Portal

        MSUT has started to use an Agreement Portal for agreement requests which has a built-in questionnaire. If you’d like to use the questionnaire, here are the instructions, and don’t forget to upload the NDA that you received. You can log in at any time to view the progress of your agreement.         KC System Implementation Update

        Click to read about the fifty-fourth edition of OSP’s Kuali Coeus System Implementation Update. The contents of this edition include: New web form for adding ORCiD ID’s and additional guidance on the new PI certification question.

        Please note: A rule change is coming on January 25 that will require ORC IDs for all faculty to be added to KC for some proposals moving forward.

        KC ORCiD update

        NIH encourages everyone from graduate students to senior scientists to register for an ORCID account and link it to their eRA Commons personal profile. ORCID iDs are required for PD/PIs on individual fellowship and career development applications submitted for due dates on or after January 25, 2020. Click for more information.

        Van Andel Institute to pay $5.5 million for not disclosing Chinese grants

        The Grand Rapids-based Van Andel Research Institute, which was accused of failing to disclose Chinese government grants to two of its researchers, has reached a $5.5 million settlement, the Justice Department announced Thursday. Click here for more information.

        MSU Research continues growth trend

        Michigan State University’s research enterprise continues its upward growth trajectory, according to new National Science Foundation data. MSU’s research expenditures for 2018 continued an upward trend for more than a decade. Click to read more

        January 20, 2020: NIH Closed for the Federal Holiday

        NIH (including help desks) will be closed on Monday, January 20, 2020, for the federal holiday (Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.). If a grant application due date falls on a federal holiday, the application deadline is automatically extended to the next business day.

        What to do when due dates fall on holidays/weekends/NIH office closures

        With the winter season upon us, remember that when a due date falls on a weekend, Federal holiday, or when Washington, D.C.-area Federal offices close (due to severe weather, for example), the application deadline is automatically extended to the next business day.

        Travel Update

        The Travel@State Project Team has posted the project update for this month. The mileage reimbursement rate decreased to 57 cents per mile for 2020.

        Please make special note that the MSU Travel and Accounting Offices are moving to East Akers on January 8.
