Dear USET/USET SPF Family,
As you may be aware, the Eastern Region primary representative to the Department of the Interior (DOI) Secretary's Tribal Advisory Committee (STAC) recently resigned and as a result, DOI issued a "Dear Tribal Leader" letter seeking nominees. At the same time, DOI has moved our Eastern Region alternate representative, Poarch Band of Creek Indians Chairwoman, Stephanie Bryan, into the primary position.
With this in mind, there is now a vacancy for the Eastern Region DOI STAC alternate. Since the DTLL identifies a deadline of TODAY, April 20th, for nominees to apply, we wanted to be sure member Tribal Nations were aware of the opportunity and also indicate our willingness to support any interested nominees from our region. Please see our previous support letter for an example of how we would extend our support to prospective candidates. Please consult the DTLL for required nomination materials and other information, including a nominee selection priority list. For more information regarding DOI STAC, please email Heidi Todacheene, Senior Advisor to the Secretary, at: STAC@ios.doi.gov.
Background
In June 2022, DOI announced the appointment of the first-ever members to its Secretary’s Tribal Advisory Committee (STAC ). The creation of the DOI STAC was announced during the 2021 White House Tribal Nations Summit to provide an avenue for Tribal Leaders to engage in routine and robust dialogue with Secretary Deb Haaland on important DOI programs and funding issues affecting Tribal Nations. The Committee’s membership is comprised of 24 Tribal Leaders—two for each of the 12 Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Regions.
