Black Women and Reparations: Isn't it Finally Time for 40 Acres and a Mule?

This week, the House of Representatives held an historic hearing on H.R.40, a bill to devise a commission to study the damages of and recommend reparations for slavery.

ICYMI, SLAVES WERE NEVER COMPENSATED FOR THEIR LABOR.  In fact, even as white plantation owners were given land after the Civil War, former slaves never received reparations for centuries of rape, pillage, and plunder.

In her piece, Dominique explains why reparations are due and how they could change the game for Black women and men, who are still suffering the effects of this country's original sin.

BlackHer Shero and former president of Bennett College, Dr. Julianne Malveaux was the only economist at the H.R.40 hearing. (She holds a Ph.D. in economics from MIT!)

Celebrating Stonewall and Honoring Marsha P. Johnson

On June 28th, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, when the LGBT community, led by a Black trans woman named Marsha P. Johnson, rose up against police and the modern-day gay civil rights movement was born.

Johnson has been called the Rosa Parks of the gay rights movement and her life and tragic death have been chronicled in a powerful Netflix documentary called The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson.
