1. December 4, 1906: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (ΑΦΑ) was the first historically African American fraternity founded in 1906 at Cornell University. (see first picture)
2. December 16 , 1961: Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph Abernathy and others were arrested at a demonstration in Albany, Ga. They were charged with obstructing the sidewalk and parading without a permit. More than 700 people were arrested in the protest.
3. December 16, 1976: President Jimmy Carter nominated Andrew Young to become U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations on this date. He was the first African American to serve in the position. (see second picture)
4. December 30, 1892: Dr. Miles V. Lynk attended the Historically Black Meharry Medical College in Nashville and became the first black doctor to practice in Madison County, Tennessee. By the age of 21, Lynk published the Medical and Surgical Observer, the first national medical journal for physicians. (see third picture)
