Art, music, events and entertainment in Penang

The whole country is back under MCO until June 6th, so all live events have been cancelled until then. There are a few online music, theatre and other events already planned; expect more of these coming up. Live events are planned after June 6th, as long as MCO 3.0 is not extended further.

MUSIC - PPO POP & JAZZ, Online, Thursday 13th May 10am

The latest in the Penang Philharmonic Orchestra’s series of virtual concerts, this time featuring pop music and jazz, premieres on YouTube.

TALK - JAPANESE TRADITIONS, Online, Friday 14th May 3pm-4pm

A diverse panel of experts, including celebrity photographer Russel Wong, speak about Japanese traditions, arts and cultural activities. Hosted by Singapore’s Asian Civilizations Museum. Free of charge on Facebook live here.

COOKING WORKSHOP - LIVE FROM TROPICAL SPICE GARDENS, Online, Friday 14th May 6pm-7pm

In this interactive, virtual class, Chef Angeline teaches how to make Chicken Biryani & Palak Paneer (Indian cottage cheese in spinach and spices). The recipe can be sent in advance so you can prepare to cook along if desired.

Chased by the public for snatching a handbag, Malim fights the voices in his head as he tries to understand his own actions. THEATRE - MANUSIA RAJA: AMUK, Online, Until May 21st

A monodrama written by Yusof Bakar and performed by
Wazir Bakri. The case of a rioter who was shot by police as seen through the eyes of different individuals.

THEATRE - KING LEAR, Online, May 25th-28th, 11am or 3pm

The KL theatre group Shakespeare Demystified used to come to Penang every year to present its shorter, and simplified versions of Shakespeare’s classic plays, to the delight of children and adults alike. This online (Zoom) presentation will be live, with the actors performing in real time--although in different venues--while the audience is watching. As always the show will be interactive, with the audience able to discuss and comment on what they see. Canonical scenes and speeches from the play in the original text, will be knitted together by narration in contemporary English. Tickets RM 30.

MUSIC - VIOLIN RECITAL, Online, Thursday May 27th 8pm

After 4 years of studying music at USM, Teetee Jay is holding an online recital. He will be playing classical music for the first half and jazz in the second half, accompanied by: Gwee Siew Ling (Classical Piano), Leonard Selva (Keyboard), Zaki Ani (Bass)

A series of workshop and talks covering different genres of music and relevant musicianship skills and insights, as part of the online Rondo Music Festival. CHARITY - A RIDE OF HOPE, George Town, Saturdays in June 9am-12pm

Organised by Penangnites for Penangnites to raise funds for  the trishaw peddlers in Armenian Street, Prangin Mall and Penang Road.  RM 50 for an hour's ride around the Heritage trial in Georgetown. The trishaw peddlers are among the worst hit and least supported during the pandemic. Ride of Hope plans to get them at least RM00 per month. Whatapp for tickets and info 0164426456

MUSIC - QUARTETS & QUINTETS, E&O Hotel, POSTPONED to Sunday 27th June 5pm

The Penang Arts Council presents Quartets & Quintets from the Penang Symphony Orchestra, Musica Sinfonietta, the Penang Philharmonic Orchestra, the Elysian Ensemble and the Mazagran Singers for an afternoon of contemporary and classical chamber music.
RM 50 standard contribution plus RM 3 admin fee

Drinks are available for purchase. A 30% discount in all the E&O’s F&B outlets is available for concert goers after the concert. All SOPs will be observed and if the concert is postponed due to MCO tickets purchased will be valid for the new date.

KECIK-KECIK GROUP SHOW 2021, Online, Until August 31st

Kecik-Kecik Group Show returns for its 2021 edition with over 50 participating artists!

Penang Art District once again collaborates with Hin Bus Depot to bring Malaysian contemporary art to a wider audience by introducing a wide variety of affordable contemporary pieces to grow a strong culture of collecting Malaysian art.

In light of the periodic Movement Control Order, this year, Kecik-Kecik will be conducted online for accessibility while keeping it safe for all artists and collectors.
