Today's Bible Study Lesson
"Rejoicing in Heaven”
Aim: Discuss
believers’
understanding of implications of God’s judgement;
Believe
that
God’s judgement
is
inclusive of God’s justice and mercy;
and Enjoy
the
love
of Christ
for
all.
Background:
Revelation 19
Bible Lesson:
Revelation 19:1-8
Memory
Verse:
“Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him:
for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself
ready.” Revelation
19:7 KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
According
to the
Nelson
Bible Handbook, the Book of Revelation is organized in three
sections: “Things Which Have Been Seen, Things Which Are, and
Things Which Will Take Place.” Our
lesson comes from the
portion of the Book of Revelation which
records “Things
Which
Will Take Place.” Chapter 19 of the Book of
Revelation recorded by the Apostle John, gives
the account of events
after the fall of Babylon which
is recorded
in Chapter
18 of
Revelation.
There
was a
real
location called Babylon, it was noted for its godlessness
and cruel
treatment of God’s people. Babylon came to mean any nation or
country or
movement
that opposed Godliness and Righteousness and encouraged and
participated in
idolatrous
behavior
(the
worship of gods
other than the True, Living God).
In Revelation 18, Babylon falls and is
utterly
destroyed. The
smoke from its destruction is
seen
from near and far. Those who had bought into
and
had profited from its
philosophies were devastated.
-
Our
lesson opens with jubilation
in heaven because
the Almighty God had destroyed Babylon. The great crowd in heaven
expressed
their
praise to God for Salvation (freedom
from sin),
Glory (splendor
and majesty),
and Power (dominion
and authority)
which all belongs
to
God.
-
Not
only was there joy because of the destruction Babylon, but now just
and true judgement is issued by God. The
nations and the
people
of the
earth
who
had succumbed
to greed, immortality, idolatry, godlessness,
etc.
were
now being called into account.
His judgement punished evil
which was represented as the great prostitute and also called
Babylon.
Like
a prostitute, godlessness, lust of the flesh, love of money, and
worshiping
the creation rather than the Creator gives
the illusion of happiness and fulfillment, but ultimately results in
regret and ruin. God’s
judgement further
avenges
the oppression and the
murder
of God’s prophets and servants.
-
The
destruction
of Babylon was complete and final as represented by the statement
that smoke
from its destruction ascends
for ever and ever!
-
The
twenty four elders and the four living beast that we learned of in
previous lessons again moved from their regal positions to fall
prostrate in front of God’s throne to worship Him and to give
praise. They shouted “Amen. Praise the Lord!” Next other
heavenly residents from the least to the greatest including all
of God’s servants and all who reverence God are
encouraged and invited to join in the Praise Party. The resulting
sound was like the roar of mighty ocean waves and the loud crash of
thunder
with the resounding words, “Praise the Lord our God, the Almighty
for He Reigns!”
-
The
rejoicing continues because
the
time
has come for the great wedding feast that celebrates the Lamb of God
and His bride. Weddings are joyous occasions and the bride is always
arrayed in her best. The bride of this occasion is the Church, those
saints across time who remained faithful and have earnestly sought
righteousness and to be in God’s Will. Like earthly weddings this
one
had been announced in advanced and anxiously anticipated. Again,
like earthly weddings, the bride is beautifully attired. In this
case, the finest of pure linen. This
fine linen symbolizes the
righteous
(upright, just, godly living, deeds, conduct, and right standing
with God) of the saints (God’s holy people). This opportunity
to be attired in white was
made possible through
God’s work of redemption for His people.
Take
Aways:
-
There
will be a time of true and just judgement and it comes when the Lamb
of God rules and issues it.
-
God’s
judgement includes both
justice
and mercy
-
God’s
love is for all humankind, but each individual is a free moral agent
to accept or reject Jesus as Lord and Savior!
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“For
God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that
the world through him might be saved.” John
3:17 KJV
“For
the time [is come] that judgment must begin at the house of God: and
if [it] first [begin] at us, what shall the end [be] of them that
obey not the gospel of God? And if the righteous scarcely be saved,
where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?” 1 Peter
4:17-18 KJV
“I
have fought a good fight, I have finished [my] course, I have kept
the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of
righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at
that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his
appearing.” 2 Timothy
4:7-8 KJV
“For
by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it
is] the gift of God:” Ephesians
2:8 KJV
“Not
by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his
mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of
the Holy Ghost;” Titus
3:5 KJV
“For
it is written, [As] I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to
me, and every tongue shall confess to God. So then every one of us
shall give account of himself to God.” Romans
14:11-12 KJV
