Choose Copi: State of Illinois renames and rebrands Asian carp
Last month, the State of Illinois unveiled a new name for invasive Asian Carp - "Copi."
Copi is a freshwater, top-feeding fish full of healthy Omega-3s, free of heavy metal contamination, and recommended by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch List. Copi is actually four fish - Bighead carp, Silver carp, Grass Carp, and Black carp, altogether known as Asian carp.
The Copi re-branding is a collaborative effort across multiple states, led by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), Asian Carp Steering Committee (ACSC), and Southern Illinois University, which share a mission to increase human consumption of Asian carp, a delicious and healthy wild-caught fish that is an invasive species threatening ecosystems of Midwestern waterways and the Great Lakes.
