Hello friends!
Recently the wonderful Paul Kingsnorth (author extraordinaire) wrote a fascinating thing about his novels. One of his readers wrote to him, thanking him for the stylistic brilliance of including birdsong at every pivotal point of his novels. A beautiful detail, for sure.
Except... Paul hadn't ever realized he did it!
That's sometimes how stories work. You spend all this time writing, coming up with cool ideas, picking your brain for the right phrase....
... And the story just does what it feels like anyway.
That happened to me as I was writing The Son of the Deathless.
I thought it was going to be one thing. But then, it decided that I was wrong and started to write itself in a completely different way.
That's good news, though.
Because I've been writing this thing nonstop for a few weeks now. And that means you're going to get the first longish story I've written in two years... soon!
I'm really excited by the direction this story is taking (hint: it has something to do with the headline of this email). I think you're going to love it.
In the meantime, here's something to tide you over:
