Sander Joon’s Moulinet wins the grand prize at the PÖFF Shorts National Competition!

The jury’s comment on the winning entry: “We agreed unanimously on the winner of this category in less than one minute, and we discussed the reasons for more than one hour. We came to the conclusion that there are some things we can’t understand no matter how hard we try.” Congratulations!

Erki Kasemets and Fideelia-Signe Roots defending their doctoral theses in December

The public defence of the art and design doctoral student Fideelia-Signe Roots’s thesis “Woman as a Hero” will take place on 22 December 2017 at 11:00 in room 440a, Estonia pst 7.

 

The public defence of the art and design doctoral student Erki Kasemets’s thesis “Outside the Ordinary: Party, Garbage and Polygon Theatre” will take place on 20 December 2017 at 11:00 in room 440a, Estonia pst 7.

Art Teachers’ Day saw almost 60 art teachers from all over Estonia taking part

For the first time, the Estonian Academy of Arts organised the Art Teachers’ Day, which introduced them to the Estonian Academy of Arts, its academic opportunities and entry requirements. Art teachers showed great interest in the event – approx. 60 careers advisers and art teachers from general education schools and hobby schools all across Estonia attended.

Agreement with the Russian Museum to show Viktor Leškin’s painting in the new EAA building

The Russian Museum has agreed to give EAA Viktor Leškin’s painting of the Tallinn State Applied Art Institute, as EAA was called at that time, on loan to be exhibited in the new EAA building at the corner of Kotzebue and Põhja pst. The painting dates to the late 1940s.

Open Lecture Series by EAA Faculty of Architecture: Manja van de Worp in Kanuti Gildi SAAL on 30 November

Manja van de Worp will be stepping on stage at Kanuti Gildi SAAL (Pikk 20, Tallinn) on 30 November at 18:00. She is the director of YIP Structural Engineering, and holds master’s degrees in Architecture, Structural Engineering, and Emergent Technologies and Design. She is a structural engineer with 10 years of professional experience in the construction industry with a focus on structure, geometry and fabrication. In her Tallinn lecture, she will focus on new typologies in engineering.

Camera operator and film director Mart Taniel to give a seminar within the framework of the EAA Department of Photography joint seminar series

The seminar will take place on Wednesday 29 November at 18:00 in room 39, Lembitu 12. All are welcome to attend. Mart Taniel is a freelance camera operator and film director. (His works include November, Empty, Autumn Ball, The Idiot and others.)

Mart Kalm and Maarin Ektermann in the Good Teaching Seminar

How to fit creation, research and teaching into only one person?

The seminar will hold a discussion between Rector Mart Kalm, Professors Lilja Blumenfeld and Piret Puppart and will be moderated by lecturer Liisa-Helena Lumberg. Tiit Ojasoo, stage director at Theatre No99 and lecturer at the Drama School, will share his experiences and views.

The seminar will take place on 7 December 2017 at 15:00-18:00 at the Estonian Academy of Sciences (Kohtu 6).

Master’s studies at EAA – life after bachelor’s studies and what makes EAA master’s studies special?

The seminar will be led by the Head of General Theoretical Studies Maarin Ektermann and Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Anne Pikkov; further contributors include Merike Rehepapp, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Design, Professor Lennart Mänd and representatives of Rundum and the Neanderthal Cave School.

 

The seminar will take place on 11 January 2018 at 15:00-18:00 in room S-103, Suur-Kloostri 11.

EXHIBITIONS

Master’s students from the EAA Department of Painting invite everyone to their end of semester show entitled ARTБАЗА on 29 November

The exhibition will take place for one night only in the second tunnel of the historical ammunition storage in Astangu. The exhibited works are site-specific and deal with the subject matter related to location from various angles.

 

Participating artists: Heleliis Hõim, Carl-Robert Kagge, Hanna-Liisa Lavonen, Anu Lehis, Solveig Lill and Miina Peterson.

The course was supervised by Jaan Toomik and Vladimir Dubossarsky.

In this show, the trickster-like Johannes Säre, graduate of the EAA Department of Photography, celebrates in his witty manner everyday situations where people have begun something but left it undone. The exhibition will remain on view until 18 December.

Sten Eltermaa’s Brussels Prelude: The Liminal Zone

Brussels Prelude: The Liminal Zone, an exhibition by Sten Eltermaa, master’s student at the EAA Department of Installation and Sculpture, is currently on view at the Tartu Art Museum project space. The exhibition brings to the fore the lines of authority and contradictory nature of the Brussels European Quarter, which hosts most of the EU government buildings. The exhibition will remain on view until 17 December.

Teaching staff members, a doctoral student and graduates of the EAA Department of Jewellery and Blacksmithing took part in Jewellery Month in the Netherlands.

EAA was represented by Professor Kadri Mälk, teaching staff member Urmas Lüüs, doctoral student Darja Popolitove, and graduates Sandra Savelli and Robert Mirka.

Taavi Suisalu among the winners of the Riga Photography Biennial Award 2018

The recipients of the award included Diāna Tamane (Latvia), Taavi Suisalu (Estonia, graduate of the EAA Department of New Media) and Kristīne Madjare (Latvia). The works of these artists will be included in the Riga Photography Biennial 2018 programme. Congratulations!
