Our team launched the Fifish V6 Underwater Drone last week! This drone allows our organization to capture video recordings of the ocean, which will assist in further scientific research regarding marine debris. Debris that is not floating either sinks to the bottom or can be suspended in the water column. Our drones help us answer questions related to what makes plastic sink and how long we have to recover it before it sinks.

Our team learned to operate the PixieDrone, a state of the art piece of Blue Technology. With the use of this drone, Seaside Sustainability and Clean Coast Coalition will be able to clean up floating debris in previously inaccessible areas and actively aid in the cleaning up of our marine and coastal ecosystems.

Seaside Attends State House Briefing
On June 25th, Grace Topouzoglou, Camila Gomez, Anne Gero, and Rowan Galanis traveled to the Massachusetts State House in Boston to attend a briefing session and support an incredibly important new bill. This event was led by State Representative Kate Hogan and State Senator Julian Cyr, both of whom drafted the PFAS bill No. H 4486. PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals,” are harmful chemicals found in many products, namely water-resistant products, cosmetics, and firefighter foam. This legislative bill will address and regulate PFAS contamination in Massachusetts, ultimately protecting public health.

Marine Debris Trawl: A Firsthand Account |
Seaside's Grace Topouzoglou recently conducted a marine debris trawl in collaboration with Peter Phippen and Geoff Walker at Plum Island. In the MD trawling process, neuston nets are cast off a slow-moving boat in order to collect samples of debris. The sample collects exceptionally small floating debris, as the net mesh is 320 microns. Evidence demonstrates that natural bodies of water contain a small to medium presence of microfibers that originate with our polyester clothing, drain out through washing machines, and escape capture from the sewer treatment plants.
"We anchored and threw out the net to collect debris," Grace recalls. "The current wasn't strong enough to get accurate readings in the first area we tried, so we moved down the marsh more towards the bridge. Then we performed the needed testing."
These tests included water temperature and water salinity measurements. After collecting data, recording coordinates, and evaluating the recovered debris, Grace and her team jotted down the results and returned safely to shore.
