Paralympians who train at the University of Bath are heading to Paris |
|
Seven athletes from four sports – Dan Bethell (para-badminton), Suzanna Hext (para-swimming), Michael Taylor (para-triathlon), and Gemma Collis, Dimitri Coutya, Piers Gilliver and Oliver Lam-Watson (wheelchair fencing) – have been selected to represent Britain when the Games take place from Wednesday 28 August – Sunday 8 September.
Defending Category A epee champion Gilliver, Coutya and Lam-Watson brought nine medals home from Tokyo between them – one gold, three silver and five bronze – and, along with four-time Paralympian Gemma Collis, will be keen to add to their tally when they compete in the stunning Grand Palais from 3–7 September.
Michael Taylor, a lower-leg amputee who will compete in the PTS4 race on 1 September says, “The course itself is incredible, right through the centre of Paris. I think the River Seine swim will hopefully really play to my strengths. It’s a nice, flat course and the weather should be relatively cool.”
Bathonian Dan Bethell – who does his regional training at the Sports Training Village – made history in Tokyo when he won Britain’s first-ever medal in the sport, a SL3 men’s singles silver.
He has high ambitions for Paris, saying: “My hope is to win the gold medal, that's what I set out to do in this sport from the very beginning. The para-badminton medals will be decided on Monday 2 September. Read our interview with Dan here.

WEEKEND RECIPES | SLIDING INTO THE BANK HOLIDAY
|
|
|
|
Words by Melissa Blease
Bank Holiday Tear'n'share Sliders
If a downpour puts a dampener on your plans for the last garden get-together of the season, hang fire on attempting to fire up the barbecue and opt for this easy-going burger traybake instead, guaranteed to put a smile on everybody's faces whatever the weather.
If you can find small bread rolls that have been baked together and still remain attached to each other, they really put the 'tear' element into the tear'n'share party. But if you can't get your hands on them, use individual small bread rolls and pack them into the roasting tin as snuggly as you can.
To make a vegetarian version, substitute the beef meatballs with a plant-based alternative, readily available in both the fridge and freezer sections of all big supermarkets.
Ingredients (makes 12 sliders)
12 beef meatballs 12 small bread rolls (see note above) Around 100ml tomato pasta sauce Caramelised onion chutney 150g mozzarella, grated 50g butter, melted 1 tsp dried oregano 40g Parmesan, finely-grated
Method
Pre-heat the oven to 180°C/gas mark 4 and line a roasting tin with foil or greaseproof paper. Heat a little vegetable oil in a large, non-stick frying pan and fry the meatballs for around 8-10 minutes or until nicely caramelised on the outside and thoroughly cooked through.
Meanwhile, carefully split the whole batch of rolls horizontally and lay the bottom base of the rolls in the lined tin. Generously spread each base with the tomato sauce and a little dollop of caramelised onion chutney, then top each one with a sautéed meatball. Sprinkle the meatballs with the mozzarella then cover with the tops of the rolls, pressing down gently as you go.
Brush the top of each roll with the melted butter, then sprinkle with the oregano and Parmesan. Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes, removing the foil for the final 5 minutes to allow the tops to turn golden.
Allow to cool slightly before transferring to a sharing platter, for tearing'n'sharing.

Bottles from Bordeaux at The Great Wine Co.
According to Bordeaux Magazine, the French region's wine harvest often starts at the end of August. The Great Wine Co. has a fine selection of bottles that showcases France's largest wine-producing region, and one that is home to a huge array of wine styles. From the sun-drenched terraces of medieval St-Emilion to the glacial gravel of the Médoc, Bordeaux is responsible for producing some of the world's most sought-after wines; not only the reds but white and dessert wines, too.

Bordeaux Rouge, La Réserve Lucien Lurton Collection | £13.30 |
|
Deep purple in colour with an expressive nose. Medium-bodied, rounded tannins, packed with red fruits and a touch of spice on the palate. A complex wine with a long finish. The wine is matured in cement and stainless steel temperature-controlled vats for 45 days. It's made at relatively cool temperatures in order to retain as much pure fruit as possible.

Péssac-Léognan Blanc, Château Lamothe-Bouscaut | £22
A beautifully sumptuous, refined white Bordeaux. Wonderfully complex mix of toasty oak with gorgeous, honeyed, rich-textured palate, beautifully balanced with fresh acidity. Situated in Cadaujac, 200 metres from Château Bouscaut, Château Lamothe-Bouscaut is an old wine estate owned by Sophie Lurton and Laurent Cogombles. Only one of Lamothe-Bouscaut's nine hectares is planted to white grape vines, of which around 70% are Sauvignon Blanc and 30% are Sémillon.

|
Entre-Deux-Mers 'Vieilles Vignes', Château Sainte Marie | £14.75 |
|
This is full of character, while gentler than a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. The first impression is of pink grapefruit and gooseberry, with just a suggestion of tomato plant. The smell is so appetising that it invites you to take a sip. Brisk and mouth-watering on the palate, balanced by some breadth and weight of texture. It finishes where it begins with a lovely persistence of pure, zesty citrus flavours. Great to drink now, or you can expect it to gain richness of texture over the next 2-3 years.

Le Relais de Durfort-Vivens, Margaux, Château Durfort-Vivens | £44
Le Relais de Durfort Vivens is the château's wine designed to provide drinking enjoyment immediately, as well as having medium-term cellaring potential. It has a deep violet-purple colour, black and red fruit aromas, with mineral and woody notes. It is rich-textured, with velvety, supple tannin structure.

The Dandy, Eau de Parfum
Penhaligon’s presents The Dandy, a woody celebration of whisky blended with mischief.
An eau de parfum paying homage to endless nights.
Let’s take it from the top. A perfectly aged whisky – straight from the oak barrel, a fine vintage for a dapper institution – with a twist: bergamot, of course, full of effervescent charm. Raspberry glitters next to patchouli (you fruity thing), refreshed by cedrat with a syrupy finish – just how we like it. And now for the bass line: ambrox, oak, cedarwood and smoke.
If these walls could talk. Now, will you take another glass?

Curated by Daniel McCabe
Werke is a UK-based, under-the-radar auto quarterly focused solely on BMW and the passionate culture that surrounds this brand. There’s only four releases out so far and all are flying out but the publisher, Will Beaumont, is aware the magazine will be a slow burner – anyone who comes across it will want to collect all available issues – and has bumped the print runs a bit higher that you might expect for the average indie. The latest issue looks at the BMW 2002 Turbo, BMW’s turbocharged racecars, the evolution of BMW alloys, the history of BMW’s now defunct research and technology department Technik GmbH and much more, including the standard first first drives and longterm test features. The History Boys by Alan Bennett, at Theatre Royal Bath, 22-31 August
Here is the 20th anniversary production of Alan Bennett’s brilliant modern classic, winner of 30 major awards, and voted The Nation’s Favourite Play in 2013.
A-Level results day. Cutler’s Grammar School. 1980s Sheffield. Eight unruly teenagers burst into adulthood with the best grades their school has ever seen, but their sights are set on something higher: to study at the most famous academic institutions in the world – Oxford and Cambridge. But their teachers can’t agree how best to tutor them. There’s Hector, the maverick English teacher who believes in culture for its own sake; Irwin - the shrewd supply teacher full of soundbites; Felix - the headmaster obsessed with league tables and Mrs Lintott - the History teacher who thinks her colleagues are all fools.
The History Boys follows this bright bunch of boys in pursuit of sex, sport and a place at university, lifting the lid on staffroom rivalries and the anarchy of adolescence. This timely revival, directed by Seán Linnen (Quiz, Chichester Festival Theatre, Queers, Old Vic), asks, what is the purpose of education? And who is it for?
