AHA: New infographic highlights hospitals’ valuable role in communities (9/22) – AHA released a new infographic highlighting that 93 percent of hospitals engage in community partnerships with local institutions to provide culturally competent care and to address food, housing, and transit needs.
Vizient: Vizient Announces Top Performers in Clinical Quality, Supplier Diversity and Environmentally Preferred Sourcing Excellence (9/22) – Vizient announced the Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Award, which measures performance on the quality of patient care in six domains: safety, mortality, effectiveness, efficiency, patient centeredness and equity.
CareSource: Food Equality Initiative receives ‘Heart of the Community’ Award from CareSource (9/28) – Food Equality Initiative received a 2023 Heart of the Community award from CareSource.
CareSource: CareSource sponsors “Panther’s Pantry,” Georgia State University’s on campus food bank (9/28) – CareSource sponsored Georgia State University’s Panther’s Pantry, which distributes food and supplies to the Georgia State community to combat short-term food insecurity.
CARE for Moms Act (9/20) – Sen. Durbin (D-IL) and Rep. Kelly (D-IL) introduced the bicameral CARE for Moms Act (S. 2846; H.R. 5568) which includes the establishment of Regional Centers of Excellence to tackle bias and promote cultural competence among health professionals, among other provisions.
Fresh Produce Procurement Reform Act
(9/21) – Sen. Brown (D-OH) introduced the Fresh Produce Procurement Reform Act (S. 2874) requires USDA to partner with growers, distributors, and food hubs to provide fruits and vegetables to community organizations while prioritizing socially disadvantaged farmers and entities, regional food inequities, and local and regional food systems.
Addressing Whole Health in Medicare Advantage Act (9/28) – Reps. Bilirakis (R-FL) and Blumenauer (D-OR) reintroduced the Addressing Whole Health in Medicare Advantage Act (H.R. 5746). Modeled after Medicare Advantage (MA) supplemental benefits, this bill will allow MA plans the flexibility to provide targeted supplemental benefits to low-income patients and other beneficiaries who are at high risk for developing chronic conditions or experiencing poorer health outcomes. Notably, this year’s version of the bill does not use the phrase “SDOH.”
HHS:National Hispanic Heritage Month Blog by Dr. Fátima Coronado (9/18) – The Associate Director for Science at CDC discussed disparate health outcomes amongst Hispanic and Latino populations in the U.S. and ways to foster cross-cultural understanding and appreciation, break down stereotypes, and promote inclusivity.
CMS:CMS Announces Recipients of the 2023 Minority Research Grant Program (9/19) – CMS’s Office of Minority Health (OMH) announced awardees for the 2023 Minority Research Grant Program and posted it on CMS.gov. Three recipients will be awarded grants to expand CMS' commitment to advancing health equity among the populations served.

Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion: Healthy People 2030 Launches New Healthy People in States and Territories Page (9/21) – Healthy People 2030 announced the publication of a new Healthy People in States and Territories web page, which includes links for most recent available health improvement plans for all states, territories, and island jurisdictions.
CMS: Public Use File On Use Of Preventive Care Services Among Medicare Beneficiaries Living In The Community In 2020 Now Available (9/21) – CMS announced the availability of a new public use file – along with an infographic
– that estimates the uptake of selected preventive services (such as annual wellness visits, blood pressure and cholesterol screenings, select cancer screenings and select vaccinations) stratified by social factors.
CMS: Calendar Year 2024 Participation in the Medicare Advantage Value-Based Insurance Design Model: Innovating to Meet Person-Centered Needs (9/26) – CMS announced the 2024 participants of the Value-Based Insurance Design (VBID) Model. All 69 participating plans prepared a health equity plan.
HHS:HHS Awards $13 Million to Improve Access to Community-Based Maternal Support Services for Pregnant and Post-partum People (9/27) – HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) awarded more than $13 million in grants to 11 organizations to develop innovative models for integrating community-based maternal support services into perinatal systems of care.
Mediciad.gov:Assurance of Transportation: A Medicaid Transportation Coverage Guide (9/28) – CMS sent a letter to state Medicaid directors to serve as a consolidated and comprehensive compilation of both current and new Medicaid transportation policy.

NASHP:NASHP Launches Multi-state Learning Lab: Healthy People, Healthy States – Addressing Health Disparities (9/18) – With support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, NASHP has launched a multi-state learning lab to support teams in developing and implementing state-specific data-driven policymaking approaches to address health disparities.
HIT Consultant: The SDOH Reality Check: Coding, Claims and Value-Based Care (9/19) – This article considers a value-based care perspective on SDOH, with a focus on Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) and Managed Care Organizations (MCO).
Health Affairs: Embedding Equity In Financial Benchmarks: Changes To The Health Equity Benchmark Adjustment (9/28) – Authors discussed the ACO Realizing Equity, Access, and Community Health (REACH) model and its detailed mechanisms designed to reflect a national call to action for health care stakeholders go beyond traditional approaches to value-based payment and address equity.

Annals of Surgical Oncology: Social Determinants of Cancer Disparities (9/18) – This article describes a holistic and integrated approach to patients with cancer and address the disparities that are derived from their socioeconomic background.
Journal of Pediatric Intensive Care:A Multicenter Retrospective Evaluation of Social Determinant of Health Z Code Usage among Pediatric Patients with Critical Care Visits during Pediatric Critical Care (9/19) – This research aims to examine SDOH code use by utilizing the TriNetX electronic health record database. The most common SDOH diagnostic code utilized was “problems related to upbringing” (50.4%).
