Why Wordle Won’t Go Away
Wordle is the latest game to take the world by storm. It’s a daily word game created by Josh Wardle (yes, it’s based on his name) to combat pandemic boredom in October 2021. In just 4 months, the game was acquired by the New York Times for seven figures. Here’s 3 reasons why Wordle became so massive in so little time: 👇 👇
1. If you know, you know:
If you’re on SocMed platforms, especially Twitter, you’d see tons of green, grey and yellow squares in a grid popping up on your timeline.
People’s curiosity would draw them in to find out what the squares mean.
Once you figure out how to play and post your squares, you instantly feel like you’re a part of the community.
It feels special to know something others don’t, hence the power of iykyk.
2. Scarcity:
Then you find out that there’s only one Wordle per day.
Whether you got it right or wrong, you’d be itching to play the next one to improve your score.
Hence, players check in daily. This becomes a routine.
To get players hooked, sometimes less truly is more.
3. Shareable:
Wordle’s difficulty level falls in a goldilocks zone, where it’s challenging enough to be engaging, yet simple enough to get right.
Hence, players feel accomplished and get a hit of dopamine.
Since everyone is guessing the same word daily, there will be a sense of competition to get the word right with the fewest guesses.
Players with good scores will post their grids on SocMed and the cycle of intrigue for outsiders is perpetuated.
Bonus fact:
There are tons of Wordle spin-offs out there, including a Malaysian version for BM words called Katapat. Give it a go and see if you dapat!
