Why should I care? IFC Films nabbed the rights to Skincare, which stars Elizabeth Banks, Lewis Pullman, Michaela Jae Rodriguez and Nathan Fillion. The film is fictional, but based on the real case of Dawn DaLuise, who was arrested and acquitted for a murder plot against a rival beauty guru.

What's the story? Famed aesthetician Hope Goldman is about to take her career to the next level by launching her very own skin care line. However, she soon faces a new challenge when a rival opens a boutique directly across from her store. Suspecting that someone is trying to sabotage her, she embarks on a quest to unravel the mystery of who's trying to destroy her life.

Anything notable? It's directed by long time music video director Austin Peters. It's his first narrative feature, but he has a long list of music videos to his credit. His directorial debut was a documentary on Major Lazer that came out in 2017 called Give Me Future.

Quarantine at Sea: Trapped Halfway to Nowhere

Why should I care? The film was written and directed by Dominic Savage, based on a story by Savage and Elliot Page. Page also produced the film and starred in it. The film premiered at Toronto International Film Festival last year, then went on to have a good festival run. It picked up two festival wins and another two nominations.

What's it about? A trans man revisits his hometown, facing family tensions. He reconnects with an old flame, rediscovering himself. His journey leads to self-acceptance and newfound strength.

Anything else notable? The project included a lot of improvisation and Elliot Page called the experience "a highlight of my life as an actor".

Mountains

Why should I care? The film had a fantastic festival run, picking up ten wins. Reviews are overwhelmingly positive, with critics saying "this slice-of-life story is a testament to the power of cinema itself." It premiered at Tribeca and was awarded a Special Jury Mention.

What's it about? A Haitian demolition worker is faced with the realities of redevelopment as he is tasked with dismantling his rapidly gentrifying neighborhood.

Anything else notable? The film is the feature length directorial debut for Monica Sorelle and it's won her nine festival awards and five nominations. She's a Haitian-American filmmaker and artist that was born and raised in Miami.

The South Got Something To Say

The Macon Film Festival is heading into its 19th year with a four-day festival planned that will run from August 15th - 18th. It takes place in Macon, Georgia and screens independent films from around the world in historic theaters in the city's downtown district.

This year, one of their special screenings is The South Got Something to Say from directors Justin Horne and Tyson Alan Horne.

Synopsis: The South Got Something To Say, a new documentary from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution tells the story of how Atlanta’s impact on hip-hop is undeniable. From chart-topping artists and viral dance crazes, to the city’s social, economic and political influence – Atlanta may not be hip-hop’s birthplace, but we are now the cultural center of the movement.

Streaming Film of the Week

The Babadook

The Babadook is now available on Netflix. The Australian psychological horror thriller came out in 2014 and was the feature directorial debut for Jennifer Kent.

The indie horror film was made for around $2Million and failed to become a commercial success in its native country of Australia. However, it generated a lot of attention internationally, getting praise for the performances, creature design, premise and themes. It has gone on to become a bit of a cult classic partly due to its popularity as an internet meme.

Synopsis: A single mother, plagued by the violent death of her husband, battles with her son's fear of a monster lurking in the house, but soon discovers a sinister presence all around her.

The film is available to stream on Netflix
