Today's Bible Study Lesson
“The
Spiritual Fruit of Freedom”
Aim: Explore the
freedoms gained when “walking by the Spirit”;
Desire
the personal and relational qualities of a Spirit-led life, and
Support
one another in living a life centered on Jesus Christ.
Background:
Galatians 5:16-26
Bible Lesson:
Galatians
5:16-26
“For
all the law is fulfilled in one word, [even] in this; Thou shalt love
thy neighbour as thyself.” Galatians 5:14 KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
We continue our Study for this
week from Apostle Paul’s Epistle or Letter to the believers in the
Roman province of Galatia. This area is believed to be modern day
southern Turkey. This letter is written to correct a false “gospel”
proclaimed by a group of Jewish Christians called Judaizers, who
believed that non-Jews had to be circumcised and conform to all of
the Mosaic laws to become Christians and refuted Paul’s teaching
of the true Gospel which was based upon faith in and a relationship
with Jesus Christ. The focus of our study is in Chapter 5, where
Paul contrasts
living by the flesh and living by the Spirit. One naturally lives by
the flesh, if he/she has not accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and
Savior.
The Bible tells us that we are all born in sin and shaped in iniquity
(Psalms 51:5 NLT “For I was born a sinner--yes, from the
moment my mother conceived me.”) Even
after accepting Christ, Christians must seek the help of the Holy
Spirit to combat the lusts and desires of the flesh as it tries to
control our behavior.
-
Galatians
5:16-21, Works of the Flesh: Paul
admonishes his readers to submit to the guidance of the Holy Spirit,
who indwells a Christian. Such submission will prevent one from
allowing the cravings of
our
natural sinful nature from controlling our
behavior. Our
sinful nature wants to do evil which means
it is an enemy of the Holy
Spirit. Both our
sinful nature and the Holy Spirit produces desires; however, these
desires oppose each other. Because of their
existence in a Christian, there is a continual struggle for
control by our
sinful nature and the Holy
which makes it difficult
for us
to execute good Christian intentions. If one allows the Holy Spirit
to direct their
actions, no longer is it the obligation of
the Mosaic Law which
motives
one’s
behavior. Paul describes the behavior that
results
from allowing our
sinful nature to control our
lives.
He lists sixteen vices or
sins. The
list begins with sexual
sins
(verse 19) which are
lustful actions carried out in one’s body that
many times also affects others.
The next group of sins
(verse 20) are
ones that affect the
harmony within relationships and community. The last group of sins
(verse 21) in the
list are produced by greed and strong desire for possessions that
you don’t have. It is
clear from Paul’s letter that this is not the first time that he
has pointed out these
sins and that his list is not a
complete list and that
there are others sins that
come from allowing one’s sinful nature to have control. Further,
Paul plainly states that the behavior described in
his list will not result in
one
inheriting
the Kingdom of God
-
Galatians
5:22-26, The Fruit of the
Spirit: Paul uses
an agricultural metaphor by liking the indwelling of
the Holy Spirit to that
of a seed that brings forth
fruit. This fruit is in stark contrast to his previous list of the
products
of one’s sinful nature. The fruit produced by the Holy Spirit is
love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
This fruit brings about
wholesomeness, harmony, and
contentment. Again, Paul
does not claim this to be the exhaustive list of the benefits
of being Spirit-led. He
states that there is no law
against these behaviors. Paul reminds his readers that those who
belong to Christ Jesus have had the passions and desires of their
sinful nature nailed to the cross and crucified there. Because
Christians are living under the guidance of the Holy Spirit we need
to let the Holy Spirit control every aspect of our lives. Paul warns
that Christians must guard against self-conceit,
competitiveness, provocation, envy, and jealousy as we seek to serve
the Lord. In the Body of Christ, there are many members, each member
has been assigned his/her
responsibility for the edification of the Saints.
Our common goal is to
please our Heavenly Father with our service.
Take
Aways:
-
We must seek and surrender to
the guidance of the indwelling Holy Spirit in every aspect of our
lives.
-
We must be aware that our old
nature continues to battle our new nature daily and we must seek
forgiveness when the old nature wins a battle.
-
We must be supportive of
other Christians, as we all seek to serve in the Body of Christ.
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Be
sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring
lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” 1 Peter
5:8 KJV
“No
temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God
[is] faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you
are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape,
that you may be able to bear [it].” 1 Corinthians
10:13 NKJV
“I
have discovered this principle of life--that when I want to do what
is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. I love God's law with all my
heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my
mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me.
Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life
that is dominated by sin and death? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus
Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to
obey God's law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.”
Romans 7:21-25 NLT
“Brethren,
if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore
such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou
also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the
law of Christ.” Galatians
6:1-2 KJV
“Therefore,
if anyone [is] in Christ, [he is] a new creation; old things have
passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians
5:17 NKJV
“For
I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among
you, not to think [of himself] more highly than he ought to think;
but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the
measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body, and all
members have not the same office: So we, [being] many, are one body
in Christ, and every one members one of another.” Romans
12:3-5 KJV
