“Empathy is choosing to see ourselves in another despite our differences. It's recognizing that the same humanity - the same desire for meaning, fulfillment and security - exists in each of us, even if it's expressed uniquely.”
Vivek Murthy
Reflection
To live the intention of this quote is easier said than done. When I started learning NVC it was so liberating. I got the ability to understand that behind every action there is a longing to meet needs. Regardless of this knowledge, the more someone differs from my own values and my desired ways of doing things, the more difficult it becomes for me to respond with empathy. It is a practice I need to conquer again and again.
Today's exercise
Next time you find yourself arguing with someone else, take a break. Try to guess what needs the person is trying to meet behind their opinions. Do you recognize these needs in yourself? Even if you are different in many aspects from each other, rest in the awareness that you share these needs, that you share the same human qualities.
Tip of the day
Watch or listen to the news today. When you hear that someone has done or said something that you don’t like, guess what needs that person was trying to meet through their actions. Think of an action you could take to meet the same needs of yours.
