Rakesprogress
Indie garden magazines are pretty thin on the ground at the moment (sorry) but among the few we have, Rakesprogress would be a standout in any field (apologies again). Each volume offers a mix of extraordinary photography and storytelling based around gardens, plants and flowers. The latest 300+ page issue features abandoned barns and farmyards that have found new lives as homes and gardens, the botanical clues woven into in mysterious medieval tapestries, the extraordinary creations of the floral artist Emily Thompson, the therapeutic power of an Ikebana drawing club, a fashion designer who left the industry to become a popular painter of trees, the ‘Rhodo craze’ project of Anglo-Chinese artist Yan Wang Preston and gravity-defying topiary in south west France.

TV The BBC's new Dawn French sitcom Can You Keep a Secret? and Netflix's Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials were both filmed in the South West!
Both The BBC's Can You Keep a Secret?, the first episode of which is out now on iPlayer, and Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, which Netflix has confirmed will be premiering on 15 January, were filmed with The Bottle Yard Studios on location in the South West.
Filmed and set in the West Country, Can You Keep a Secret? is the story of an odd little family you haven’t met yet, but that you already know – a sitcom that places comedy icon Dawn French in the middle of some mischief we can all relate to.
Can Debbie Fendon and her family keep their secret? Or will one of them spill the beans?
Confirming the premiere date and releasing first images and teaser trailer, Netflix teases that Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials promises a witty, fast-paced, and stylish take on one of Christie’s most intriguing mysteries — where secrets, scandal, and murder lurk behind every corner of a grand English estate.
Along with this, The Small City Bookshop in Redfield, Bristol is one of just seven bookshops across the UK that has partnered with Netflix to mark the release by offering a Seven Dials goody bag.

Cinema FilmBath present H is for Hawk + Q&A, 17 January
H is for Hawk promises to be one of the cinematic highlights of 2026.
The book and the film are not only a memoir of grief, but also a history of falconry and a reflection on T H White, best known for writing a series of books about King Arthur including The Sword In the Stone. White also reared a goshawk.
Claire Foy plays Helen Macdonald, a journalist and writer who is deeply upset when her beloved father (played by Brendan Gleeson) dies suddenly. Helen had been a falconer when she was younger, and decided to take on the rearing and training of a goshawk, a raptor which is notoriously difficult to manage.
Both screenings, presented by FilmBath at the Little Theatre, will be followed by a Q&A with local director Philippa Lowthrope and author of H is for Hawk Helen MacDonald.
The Little Theatre Cinema,St Michael's Pl, Bath BA1 1SF | 2.45pm and 5.45pm
Tickets from £13.75 | filmbath.org.uk

Matt Weston sets new track and start records at legendary St Moritz as he storms to fourth Skeleton World Cup gold of Olympic season
Matt Weston, who trained in Bath, extended his dominance of the 2025-26 IBSF Skeleton World Cup season into Olympic year by winning the rescheduled men’s race in St Moritz on Wednesday.
The reigning World Champion, who trains with the British Bobsleigh and Skeleton Association (BBSA) at the University of Bath, set new start and track records during a blistering second run as he built on a rapid first outing to finish more than a second clear of the field in a combined time of 2:15.67.
It was Weston’s fourth gold medal from five races this season and returned him to the top of the podium after taking silver behind team-mate Marcus Wyatt in the last race of 2025.
We caught up with some of the Winter Olympians, including Matt, from Team Bath in our January issue. Read here.

Van Graan names team for trip to Castres
The Investec Champions Cup returns this weekend, seeing Bath Rugby head to the south of France to take on Castres Olympique.
With all five teams in Pool 2 having won one game and lost one game, there is everything to play for upon the return of the European competition. Johann van Graan's front row remains unchanged from last weekend's victory over Exeter Chiefs, seeing Beno Obano, Tom Dunn and Vilikesa Sela retaining their starting jerseys. Quinn Roux comes back into the starting line-up, joining Ross Molony in the tight five. Ted Hill and last week's Man of the Match, Alfie Barbeary, retain their positions in the back row, with Miles Reid coming in to complete the forwards pack. Ben Spencer will captain from scrum-half joined by Finn Russell at fly-half. Cameron Redpath remains as inside centre, joined by Max Ojomoh who starts at 13. Will Muir, Henry Arundell and Santi Carreras complete the back line. Francois van Wyk, Kepu Tuipulotu and Thomas du Toit will provide their impact from the bench, alongside Josh Bayliss and Guy Pepper. Tom Carr-Smith, Will Butt and Joe Cokanasiga complete this weekend's replacements.
The game kicks off at the Stade-Pierre at 9pm on 9 January (8pm GMT).
