Message from the chair
May is a time for celebration and new beginnings. At the university of Buffalo, we will be celebrating the commencement of our graduating classes of 2024. In addition, we will be entering the summer months and a time for our own personal development, otherwise known as “a time to sharpen the saw.”
Commencement and our own personal development have a few things in common. Commencement brings together a diverse community of students, professors, alumni, and guests and reinforces the sense of belonging to a large academic family with lasting connections. Similarly, Personal Development is an opportunity to build meaningful relationships as well, networking with colleagues, mentors, and industry professionals while expanding your knowledge base and future opportunities.
Commencement is a time of immense happiness, and a strengthening of our identity. Graduates wear their academic regalia with immense pride. While representing their alma mater, they also represent their academic discipline, their achievements, and even the fulfilled aspirations of their families. Likewise, during the summer months, additional education and personal development is a time to reflect on our place in our department and our university. It is a time to take the things we learned in our college days and extend our skills to take on new challenges, as our family, friends, and colleagues support us proudly.
Commencement is it time for new beginnings, not just an end. Graduates leave with great confidence, lasting memories, lifelong friendships, and technical skills ready to embark on fresh adventures. Correspondingly, personal development can be the catalyst for a tremendous confidence boost on our career path. As you achieve milestones in your personal development journey, your confidence growth is essential for taking on new challenges, speaking up in meetings, and pursuing leadership roles.
I remember how I felt the day I graduated like it was yesterday. I felt like I could conquer the world and that my whole wonderful life was still ahead of me. My wish for you this month is that you take the opportunity for some stimulating training, education, or other personal development here at UB, through the PSS, or at another venue. Imagine if you could rekindle that feeling of invincibility just a touch this summer. How good it would feel!
No matter how hectic, enjoy the closing days of the 2023/24 Spring Semester, and happy Memorial Day in advance.
